January is named for the Roman god Janus, and today, January 1st, is his feast day. Janus is a god who oversees beginnings and endings, transitions that time itself brings about. He is associated with doors and gates, standing at the end of the old year and the beginning of the New Year. Janus is depicted with two heads joined at the back, symbolizing looking back into the past and forward into the future.

Janus oversees our choices, helping us make good decisions. This two-faced god urges us to look back so we can go forward with clarity about our future. At this time of year, we look back over the past year to understand what we've learned about ourselves so we can make the right choices about what we want in the coming year.

When you live in cyclical time, you know that with every ending comes a new beginning, one thing transforming into another. When you live in the knowledge of birth-death-rebirth, you know that letting go of something makes room for something new to come into your life.

Instead of making 'New Year resolutions' now, perhaps it will serve us better to stay in the silence of winter and listen to what our soul wants of us this coming year. The Baby of Light was just born on Winter Solstice--we shouldn't expect it to get up and start exercising right away! As with any new baby, we really need to just take care of our inner Light now--let it have time to grow into something, which will be revealed around February 2nd, the Celtic gateway of Imbolc. Also known as Candlemas and Ground Hog's Day, this is the time when we first get a glimpse of what new thing is developing within us, just as the outer light grows enough so we can predict the coming Spring.

So take this month of January to look back so you can look forward. Your New Year's resolutions can wait. Learn to make the right choices, rather than the expedient ones.

Cancer Full Moon, January 4-5, 2015

In this coldest, darkest part of the year, the Full Moon falls in the sign of Cancer, the sign of the Mother and of the emotional body. The Capricorn Sun symbolizes the social structures and physical reality of our world. The Cancer Full Moon illuminates how well this reality is serving our life. In the end, it falls to us to make the choices that bring us happiness, fulfillment and peace.

This intense Full Moon connects us once again with the ongoing Pluto/Uranus square, as well as with the lunar nodes. We again find ourselves at a crossroads of consciousness. Will we revert back to our old ways of thinking and doing or will we step into our power and actually create the life we crave?

The Sun joins up with Pluto in Capricorn on Saturday, January 3rd. Pluto is the archetypal energy of the Underworld, pushing us to evolve by bringing to light our personal and collective shadows. The Sun symbolizes our consciousness and when these two energies combine, we can no longer ignore those shadowy elements of our personality--or of our world. Add in the asteroid Vesta and we can truthfully look at what is out of alignment in our lives and start to bring things into balance and wholeness.

The Cancer Full Moon makes us aware of how well our 'rules' and social structures fulfill their purpose. This Cancer Full Moon wants us to pay attention to our real needs and passions. This potent combination says that the choice is ours--will we align with our soul's purpose or continue to sleep-walk through life as a servant of patriarchy and corporate consumerism?

If you are bold and brave enough, you will accept Uranus in Aries' challenge to bring your own unique talents and blessings out into the world. While Pluto joins the Capricorn Sun and opposes the Cancer Moon, Uranus squares (90*) them, (the Sun on Jan. 3rd/ the Moon on Jan 4th) challenging the old outer structures and emotional body patterns that keep our life going in the same direction. It is a wake-up call--don't sleep through it!

We just went through the 6th Pluto/Uranus square on December 14th and will be coming up on the 7th and last square in March. When this revolutionary and evolutionary energy connects with both the Sun and Moon, our whole world needs to be rocked. Are we for the future or the past? Will we bring our collective will in line with the heavenly energies? Only if we each do our part and personally change our life and our world.

I believe that Americans are called to a higher consciousness at this point in our history. We are called on to live up to our ideals and create the country our forefathers imagined. Inner consciousness needs to be acted upon for social justice.

Cathy believes that our writers and artists must take up our responsibility to create art that inspires, teaches and heals our humanity.

Cathy writes about political, psychological/spiritual, and cultural issues.
