This is not an election.

This is a con game, a scam, a grift, a hustle, a bunko, a swindle, a flimflam, a gaffle, and a bamboozle.

In this carefully choreographed scheme to strip the American citizenry of our power and our rights, "we the people" are nothing more than marks, suckers, stooges, mugs, rubes, or gulls.

We are victims of the Deep State's confidence game.

In this particular con game, every candidate dangled before us as some form of political saviorincluding Donald Trump and Joe Bidenis part of a long-running, elaborate scam intended to persuade us that, despite all appearances to the contrary, we live in a constitutional republic.

In this way, the voters are the dupes, the candidates are the shills, and as usual, it's the Deep State rigging the outcome.

Terrorist attacks, pandemics, civil unrest: these are all manipulated crises that add to the sense of urgency and help us feel invested in the outcome of the various elections, but it doesn't change much in the long term.

No matter who wins this election, we'll all still be prisoners of the Deep State.

We just haven't learned to recognize our prison walls as such

It's like that old British television series The Prisoner, which takes place in a mysterious, self-contained, cosmopolitan, seemingly idyllic retirement community known only as The Village.

Perhaps the best visual debate ever on individuality and freedom, The Prisoner (17 episodes in all) centers around a British secret agent who abruptly resigns only to find himself imprisoned, monitored by militarized drones, and interrogated in The Village, a beautiful resort with parks and green fields, recreational activities and even a butler.

While luxurious, the Village is a virtual prison disguised as a seaside paradise: its inhabitants have no true freedom, they cannot leave the Village, they are under constant surveillance, all of their movements tracked. Residents of the Village are stripped of their individuality and identified only by numbers

First broadcast in Great Britain 50-some years ago, The Prisoner dystopian television series described as "James Bond meets George Orwell filtered through Franz Kafka" confronted societal themes that are still relevant today: the rise of a police state, the loss of freedom, round-the-clock surveillance, the corruption of government, totalitarianism, weaponization, group think, mass marketing, and the tendency of human beings to meekly accept their lot in life as prisoners in a prison of their own making.

The series' protagonist, played by Patrick McGoohan is Number Six.

Throughout the series, Number Six is subjected to interrogation tactics, torture, hallucinogenic drugs, identity theft, mind control, dream manipulation, and various forms of social indoctrination and physical coercion in order to "persuade" him to comply, give up, give in and subjugate himself to the will of the powers-that-be.

Exactly what 'they' are trying to control is not really clear. Just what we the people want isn't too clear either. Foreign powers seem to be able to exert power over us with impunity and the 'Deep' state can't control THAT. So it appears that the control people are trying to have over us works for some purposes but for the most part is ineffectual. Maybe we need a better understanding of exactly what freedom is.

And so where might a solution be? Is this deep state really the Government of We the People enshrined in our Constitution requiring representatives to this republic who actually represent us and our needs, or is it the unregulated control of our institutions by corporate personhood for personal profit and the last 40+ years of widening wealth & income distribution that seems bent on returning us to the Kings and Serfdom society of the 1600's that lead our forefathers to attempt our experiment to start anew?

I doubt there is any "solution". Furthermore, the people of modern states have always, unwittingly to a large extent, lived under a corrupt system, where the real power was beyond their control. It used to be the aristocracy and wealthy landowners, then the capitalists. Nothing has really changed over recent centuries.

However, one needs to be aware of all this, in order not to be confused about what's going on at the heart of a modern state. You've just got to adapt to the situation and live out your life as successfully as you can. Ignore all conspiracy theories and political "promises". They are truly fake news.

The film The Social Dilemma, which someone at OEN recently recommended (Thank you!) explains the great amount of control the internet exercises over all of us through apps like Google search, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others. If you think you already understand this or feel that you are immune, it's worth watching. In my opinion, it's a bit biased in some parts where it indicates influences from Russia and rightist groups while not mentioning those from the Democrats, but I didn't feel it detracted from the overall information.

Thanks for the description of The Prisoner! I'm downloading the first two episodes now.

You can vote for A: a corrupt senile old rapist and nothing will change. Or B: a corrupt senile old rapist and nothing will change.

Deception is an old tool that is only effective because we choose denial rather than facing the implications of what is obvious. Awareness is an all-empowering tool for recognizing our failure to acknowledge ignorance.

Unfortunately, many people never realize the disinformation that steers them away from seeing the bigger picture of reality. A substantial part of the "civilized" world appears to be racing toward doom by investing in vast falsehoods. How far must the lies and deceit proceed until humanity is willing to relinquish its denial?

Sadly, it increasingly appears that a world-wide collapse will be required for us to wake up, transform ourselves, and demand life-promoting change (and truth) from our leaders and social systems. As long as "business as usual" prevails we are up the creek without a paddle.

Great compassion and a willingness to wield he sword of truth are - and will be - needed.

As a retired and proud member of the so-called Deep State, I find this essay to be yet another conspiratorial fantasy - except for the part about the fact that regardless of popular vote outcomes the special interests win. That bit stands up to empirical scrutiny.

The real Deep State members are the civil servants who network across agencies (Congress and the WH too) to ensure that the people's will is executed per regulation and intent of the law. The Deep State are the adults in the room who buffer against the rash and misguided impulses of powerful elected and appointed officials. Regardless of our party affiliation (most my fellow Deep Staters were registered as NPA), we try to ensure that the right thing gets done for the individual citizen and for the country. Unfortunately, most voters are clueless about our role because elected officials and appointees demand credit for our work.

What makes one a member of the Deep State is not old school ties or being CIA spies. It is that you have been around long enough to know how the system works, and to have established solid working relationships with people in your area of responsibility who work in other agencies and offices to ensure smooth coordination. In many instances, you are the person who knows whom to call. My favorite boss, a 4-star Admiral, sometimes referred to me as his "other-hand man." When asked to explain, he'd say: "People come into my office all day telling me what, on the one hand, they think I should do. I have Tom here to help me discover what's on the other hand before I decide what to do." That, is the Deep State. We do not work for special interests. We don't work against the republic. The special interests we serve are those of our fellow citizens.

Thank you for your service. Be forewarned though. If you stick around here for too long you will become very uncomfortable when you realize that almost everything that you believed for 30+ years was false.

Tom,

My assessment of your post is that there are key pieces of knowledge you are missing. I get that you are a good person and mean very well. No doubt there are many good and dedicated people working in the government. However, it appears the opposite is also true. There's much more to say, but for now, I'd invite you to see some of my previous Oped articles.

Dead right, John, sadly. This is true for the U.S. but also for all the so-called "democracies" around the globe.

Elected "representatives" make a living by selling their votes to lobbyists [who represent the corporate military-industrial complex].

Believing that Members of Congress or Members of Parliament represent us, the people, is pure mythology.
