"Decisions about us without us are being made every day."--Maria Teresa Kumar
This panel, moderated by Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, executive director/CEO of MomsRising.org, included other key leaders of women's movements in this country: Alicia Garza, founder of the international Black Lives Matter movement; Ai-Jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance; Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino; and Cecile Richards, former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America from 2006 to 2018 and presently a trustee of the Ford Foundation board.
WE NEED A NEW POLITICAL SYSTEM. WE'RE IN AN ERA OF REIMAGINING. CHILDCARE IS NOT A WOMEN'S ISSUE, NOR IS ELDERCARE, BUT THEY CONCERN ALL OF US; WHAT'S GOOD FOR WOMEN IS GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY.
IT WAS WOMEN WHO GOT KAMALA HARRIS AS VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.
OUR ISSUES ARE EVERYONE'S ISSUES. WE MUST TURN OUT OR ELSE. WE'RE CLOSEST TO ALL THAT'S WRONG HERE.
WE'RE READY TO DO THE WORK, WITH NO WOMAN LEFT BEHIND!
OCCUPY THE VOTING BOOTH IN 2020!
WOMEN ARE THE SUPERMAJORITY! SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER FOR ALL OF OUR ORGANIZATIONS!
FIND YOUR LANE, GET IN IT, AND GET BUSY! THERE IS PLENTY OF WORK FOR ALL OF US TO DO, TO BE SURE THAT ALL WHO CAN VOTE WILL VOTE. WE DON'T KNOW WHO WILL WIN THE PRESIDENCY IN NOVEMBER 3, BUT PREPARE TO BE ON THE STREETS NOVEMBER 4. THIS GUY'S NOT LEAVING WILLINGLY!
First of all, the subject of Kamala Harris's nomination as Joe Biden's VP candidate electrified all five along with, they said, the communities of color. They also expressed elation about Corey Bush's upset victory to become US representative of Missouri's first congressional district.
Women and communities of color are experiencing unprecedented wins across the country up and down the ballot, said Garza.
Ai-Jen Poo raved about the greatly expanded possibilities when women and particularly women of color take charge of things.
There is no Plan B, said Kumar. Harris can fix Barr's mess; the covid19 pandemic exposed all the systemic injustices in this country.
Richards praised Biden for breaking stereotypes with his choice of Harris. This week gave us the energy to persevere through to November 3. She pointed out that Trump and Ryan's pledge to abolish Planned Parenthood never reached fruition. A record number of black women are running for office and "will carry us over the line," she said. In 2018, Texas elected two Latinas to Congress for the first time.
