Feel helpless? Your voice won't be heard? Nothing you can do? Cheer up: Here are a few action strategies we can implement in a peaceful way.
A) Send out an email to like-minded friends, asking them to join you in writing to your local City Councils, County Supervisors, etc., urging them to pass a public, pro-impeachment resolution. Give them facts, including poll figures, to convince them why this is important and in the best interest of their public image.
B) Write letters to the editor. As before, give facts and poll figures to support your assertions. Opinions only generate counter-opinions, but facts and polls will get people thinking.
You might even consider doing a letters-to-the-editor party at your house. Invite like-minded friends, read each others' letters out loud and the feedback you get can become your instructive points for editing your letter. It could be fun and very interesting too, to see whose writing style communicates best, and why. Combine the party with dancing, hors doevres, and make it fun, and you will draw more friends and have a good time while you are at it!
If you think your mainstream editor won't print what you have to say, try the local newspapers and college editorial boards instead. Remember: People talk, so it will be much more than just the cross-sector of readers who you will be reaching. And you never know who is going to read your letter: A movie maker, a radio talkshow host, a key person of an activist entity....you never know. Get the ball rolling, anywhere you can!
C) Post facts to blogs, websites, etc. Try to avoid opinions and stick with facts. Facts sell themselves, while opinions only generate emotional responses (which could be for or against your own).
D) Did you know that you can meet in person with your US and State Representatives and Senators? Yup. It takes organizing and it can be hard to get in the door: Let's admit it. But it can be done and often does lead to success. Call their offices and organize a citizen's meeting. Go with other like-minded people to show support.
You could also organize this through your local Democratic organization or ACLU or whoever you wish to organize with. If you go with a local entity, you are more likely to get a meeting booked.
Usually it's the Aide of the politician you will be meeting with, but sometimes you can even successfully nail down a meeting with the officials themselves.
E) Arrange with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, etc to stand outside and hand out leaflets with facts. Set up a table.
TIPS (based on my experience working on the local County ACLU Board and tabling at fairs, etc):
Big photos are eye-catchers and will draw interest. Simply talking won't get anyone involved. Hang big and showy photos (you can have things copied at Kinko's in poster size/color for about $5) and a few large, poster-size slogans. This will catch eyes and draw attention to your activist work. Then draw people in with facts, not opinion. Hand out fliers.
F) Flier tips:
A lot of fliers will be tossed in the garbage without being read. So what can you do to catch eyes and attention?
Same as above. Photos are the key. Color photos showing scenes that tell the whole story. It could be a photo showing Bush saying a certain thing, or doing a certain thing, or in a certain location saying a certain thing. People will look at photographs and then want to read. So be sure to include a catchy photo on your fliers/handouts.
Then write your blurb below the photo.
