In Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, the Way is described as the intercourse of Yin and Yang, or Female and Male. The Yin is the receptive agent of the creative process while the Yang is the entering agent. Thus, the Sun and Earth make love. The Sun's rays enter into the atmosphere and soils of the Earth and touch upon the seeds hidden below the dirt. The seed then unfold her potential which is initiated by the masculine actions of the Sun. The seed in this case is exactly the same as an egg in a mammal, be she whale or human being.
In some cases, "seed" is used in a masculine fashion in terms of "seeding an idea". In this sense, the seed is seminal to conception. This also reflects the more action orientation of the male (e.g., sperm swimming up the vagina) and the receptive/drawing action of the female. This is why male is equated to positive charges and female to negative. In essence, the negative attracts the positive. As many men and women must realize, during sexual attraction, there is a "magnetic" tug that attracts two people together. This is nothing more, or less, than a manifestation of cosmic process, the intercourse of negative and positive. Unfortunately, sexism has come about and caused us to suppress the feminine by equating negative with "bad."
While the Female may be negative and receptive, She is not necessarily passive. For example, a woman's body has a magnetic resonance to it that attracts the male. Even though she may not go over to a man and begin to seduce him, her body can oftentimes produce negative ions that attract the man to her.
Making Love is the creative process. In the form of sexual intercourse, it can produce higher states of awareness, as reflected in Tantric practices in the East in which higher dimensions of consciousness are elicited through love making. It can also lead to higher dimensions of consciousness in every day living. Regardless of intercourse resulting in a baby or not, sex is a creative act. It can give birth to a baby, or the experience of a higher/more uniting dimension of reality. It can also result in a lot of pain as in the case of rape, or sloppy, non-caring sex. It also can result in pain due to issues such as performance anxiety. Perhaps we should start teaching a way in which the process of sex is "allowed" and not brought under the guise of performance criteria?
Intercourse ultimately is simply the process in everything we do, and in everything the universe does. It is the Way. This writing is entering your eyes and you are conceiving it in your mind. You and I are making love. And, you are going to conceive in relationship to these words. You may disagree, and this is a conception. Or you may agree, and this too is a conception. Either way, we are in the creative dance of yin and yang. In this case, my words are male and your Psyche female. If you write to me, this reverses.
Thus it can be said that sex is more verb than noun.
What is sex according to many? The common defition of sexuality is illustrated in the following quote taken from Tripod.com. (see url listed below) :
It is the division of living being, that identifies as male or female. More commonly sex is known for contact between man and woman for the purpose of carnal appetite. Persons after attaining puberty are attracted to opposite gender; desire emerges to have physical contact that relieves carnal craving is sexual love.
Interesting, sex is "division of living being" which then goes on to say sex is "known for contact between man and woman for the purpose of carnal appetite". These are two contrary notions. Sex as a noun, is indeed, divisive. Thus we are seen as either a woman or a man. This is our sex. Yet, sex is also integrative. When we feel the magnetic tug of the "other," we are being asked to unite which is then called, "having sex."
Sex is a dance of division and unity. It expresses the universe. As Lao Tzu realized, sex is universal process. Thus the Sun and Earth make love. From that lovemaking, plants, trees and human beings emerge from Her soils. This is also why Intelligence or Wisdom is often seen as Female, as illustrated in the name Sophia. Wisdom is simply That which conceives the universe. She is also that which conceives this article as writer and reader.
Sophia is the Process of Nature. She may be the Yin of the Universe, but She is also the driver of the Process. In creation myths, it is often the Female that generates Desire, Eros, who is often seen as Male. Thus, the Rig Veda states, "Desire came upon that one in the beginning, that was the first seed of Mind." Eros is thus the first born and is that which initiates the unfolding of all potentials contained within the Mother. Mind you, no woman is a Mother unless there is an "other." This is why "other" is embedded in the name. There has to be a separation, and in creation myths, in the beginning all is a non-differentiated unity which then divides into multiplicity. If there were no "Other," there would be no Mother. Just so, the eye cannot see itself unless it looks into a mirror. This is why Genesis 1:27 of the Bible states that God creates humanity in Her image, male and female.
Yet, Female and Male do not come into existence until there is the "other." This is why the most formal name for a woman who has given birth is "M-Other." If we remained united with Her (both as Nature and as child), She would have no sense of Herself, as reflected in the eyes of Her child. There simply is no self-awareness unless there is an "other." This is why we are born and have a "M-other."
Life thus is a big dance of self-discovery. All of this, the planets, deep space, the trees, seas and bumble bees are all about self-discovery. And the Self, Brahmin in Hindu and Yahweh in Judia-Christian lore, cannot known unless there is an other. The limitation of Infinity is that there is no Other. This is why She becomes a M-Other. And, this is., simply, the primary reason YOU are here. And this is how you are not an alien in an alien universe.
You play no small part in this dance.
