Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in recent picture explaining US intentions in Venezuela.

This should not come as a surprise. The US will resort to anything in its bald faced attempt to overthrow legitimately re-elected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The latest US ploy was having its self appointed interim President Juan Guaido traveling in a motorcade through a working class, Maduro supported area of Caracas where his government police were seen protecting Guaido. Max Blumenthal, an independent journalist on the ground in Venezuela put it this way, Guaido came there, "because the US wanted him to get arrested to create a provocation". [1]

At a rally specifically planned to be held in Maduro's base, "Guaido got out of his armored car and very few people attended it." It showed, "how irrelevant Guaido is becoming. Most people are staying home."

Blumenthal believes "it's the heavy US backing which is actually harming the oppositions cause", that the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration is "financial terrorism and it's an attack on everyone, regardless of their political affiliation. I think Venezuelan's recognized that they the people have no desire to back Washington's man."

Well there you have it.

Despite Washington's sanctions, the sabotage of the country's electrical grid, the phony humanitarian aid convoy, overt threats of a US military intervention, withholding the release of $billions of Venezuelan gold held in London, threatening countries with secondary sanctions if they buy Venezuelan oil, Trump appointing convicted war criminal Elliott Abrams as special envoy to Venezuela who along with Trump, his national security adviser John Bolton, Idiot Senator Marco Rubio spouting, "all options are on the table", the blatant US attempt for regime change in Venezuela appears to be floundering.

Of course it hasn't hurt Maduro getting a little help from his friends, China, Iran, Cuba, Turkey, Bolivia, Nicaragua, North Korea but especially Russia. Cuba by way has some 10,000 doctors operating in Venezuela which the US condemns as Cuban "interference".

Some nine days ago on March 23 Russia sent two military transport planes carrying 100 military advisers and cargo outside Caracas. The Russian foreign Ministry said the deployment was "in strict accordance with the Constitution of that country and with full respect for its legal norms." Bolton harrumphed in a tweet, "The US will not tolerate hostile foreign military in the western hemisphere" apparently re-invoking the US Monroe Doctrine.

Russia sending two military planes, a 100 men and some cargo is not exactly a military show of force but it's clearly a sign Russia remains a close friend of Maduro and is not afraid to show it particularly at this juncture of increased US bravado against the man.

So there's a small contingent of Russian troops in Venezuela.

Let's remember in Syria the US took precautions to avoid any military confrontations with Russian air force operations in that country. Thus in a similar situation in Venezuela, despite US protests, the last thing it would want is a military confrontation with Russia where any of the latter's troops could be killed.

Putin has made a calculation. With US and NATO troops on Russia's doorstep Putin putting Russian troops on the ground in Venezuela presents a similar scenario to the US in the western hemisphere; a sort of quid pro quo.

Despite the cacophony of Trump, Bolton, Pompeo, Abrams, Rubio et al, the last thing the US would want is a direct military confrontation with Russia anywhere in the world, including Venezuela.

Needless to say any direct military confrontation with Russia, a nuclear superpower should be seen as unthinkable. Maybe not to a crazy Bolton probably the only one in Trump's entourage who believes the US could win a nuclear war with Russia. Yet it's all but certain the brass at the Pentagon know the US would be annihilated in retaliation for a US first strike on Russia.
