America is slowly waking up to the reality of President Elect Trump. How odd to type those words. Just watching the new First Family in action these last unbelievable days is like a reality TV show. All they're missing is a couple of Kardashians and an Osbourne or two and it could be broadcast on MTV. Hell, better not say it too loudly, they'll bring in the camera crews, if they haven't planned that already.
Every day brings a fresh shock to the senses. Reince Priebus running the Oval Office. Sarah Palin as Secretary of the Interior. Ben Carson heading the Dept. of Education. Giuliani as Attorney General. Steve Bannon is to be chief strategist? That's a winner for the white supremacists. And, God have mercy, Newt Gingrich could be the next Secretary of State.
Chris Christie, Jeff Sessions, John Bolton, Bob Corker...and conservative talker Laura Ingraham have all been named potential team members. It reads like a list of middle school bullies sent to the principal's office.
Obama is setting sail for Europe on a farewell tour, and to allay the fears of anxious world leaders who fear the US is having a national nervous breakdown. The reaction of world leaders has varied from hearty congratulations and fist-bumping in Russia, to extreme trepidation in France. Putin is pleased as punch -- senior nationalist MP Vladimir Zhirinovsky actually threw a party at the parliament building after Trump's big day. French President Francois Hollande said Mr Trump's victory "opens a period of uncertainty," but Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is euphoric.
As the BBC reports: "Jewish Home party leader and Education Minister Naftali Bennett said the notion of a Palestinian state was over after Donald Trump's win. 'Trump's victory is an opportunity for Israel to immediately retract the notion of a Palestinian state in the center of the country, which would hurt our security and just cause,' he said. 'This is the position of the president-elect... The era of a Palestinian state is over.'"
Wow. So much for that.
And just as the effects of global climate change are reaching boiling point in the USA, science-denier Trump has said that he will "cancel" the Paris Climate Agreement in his first 100 days, and promised to reverse Obama's climate change regulations. And Obamacare is on the trash heap, too.
On a personal level, we keep wondering how to explain this madness to our children. Molly's 7th grade social studies class is currently studying the US election process -- what will they learn about our new President? Or children younger than Molly who really cannot understand what just happened, how do we teach them to respect the highest office in the land when the man himself respects no one?
He objectifies and demeans women in the grossest terms, groups all Mexicans into a hoard of rapists and murderers, and calls for a religious test for US citizens with a prospective ban on Muslims. How do you reconcile that with our definition of America as the land of the free, with liberty and justice for all?
The backlash is happening already. The knuckle-dragging racists are having an early Christmas. Stories of racial violence, hate crimes, and open-air bigotry are flooding the airwaves. Here in metro Atlanta, a Muslim schoolteacher received an ominous note from a high-schooler warning her that her "head scarf was no longer allowed," adding that "she better take it off her head and wrap it around her neck and hang herself." Swastikas painted on Jewish synagogues, another Muslim woman in Michigan ordered by a thug to remove her hijab or he would light it on fire. "Black Lives Don't Matter" scrawled in graffiti on a railroad car.
Welcome to Trump's Amerikkka
And let's say that the Trump University scandal -- or a similar debacle -- results in a Trump impeachment, then we have President Pence.
What then?
Stay tuned, it's going to get real interesting.
