Only God knows how much radioactive waste has run off, from the continental United States and Asia, into the oceans. Only the gods know how many barrels of nuclear waste from countries like France, the USA, and Russia have been carted out on freighters into the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and dumped. The French blew up a Greenpeace ship by New Zealand for dogging one of France's nuclear-waste dumping freighters.

The Russians continue to have the least-contained, most-dangerous reactor designs in the world running on undependable mox [a type of nuclear fuel] made in Mayak. Two Russian reactors may have already gone off since Chernobyl. You will not hear about that. There were elevated radiation readings in Europe, since Fukushima, that came from Russia and stunk of high-level reactor releases.

Busby used a gamma spectrometer off the coast of the Baltic Sea by Russia and found that cesium 134 and 137 levels were twice as high, post Chernobyl, as they should be, in 2017.

America is a radioactive crudhole with places like Hanford, Three-Mile Island, and multiple open-air nuclear tests for decades. Ninety-seven of the leakiest, oldest, most cracked and brittle nuclear reactors in the world. Tens of thousands of tons of the worst high-level nuclear waste are spread across the USA.

Now think about Russia and Japan and the Arctic ocean and Pacific ocean for a minute.

Many places in Russia are so radioactive that one cannot stand for 30 minutes without dropping dead. Russia has the distinction of being one of the most radioactive countries on earth! Up there with Japan and many places in America.

The CIA will tell you about Russia's shrinking demographics, but they will not tell the truth about it.

Half the men and women in Russia have fertility problems from massive radionuclide contamination. The CIA says it is from an aging Russian population and bad Russian economy. I knew a Russian doctor that was in a port where a Russian sub blew in the late '80s. She has had dysmenorrhea and has been bleeding since then.

The Russians run nuclear-powered ice breakers in the Arctic. America is a radioactive shithole and so is Russia. The Russians have dumped two hundred thousand tons of high-level nuclear waste in the Arctic ocean. That includes the old nuclear reactors it has pushed into the Arctic and Baltic oceans and the old nuclear submarines there. Altogether there are probably a half a million tons of the highest-level radionuclides dumped in the Arctic ocean, from Russia, the USA, France and England. Some of that high-level waste is constantly changing. Some has longer lasting, heat-generating radionuclides like pyrophoric plutonium

As a mechanical engineer, you know that nothing under pressure and heat or with moving parts does not break. Entropy

Wtih the looming sea level rise all coastal reactors are in even more danger. Done properly ocean disposal is the best solution for the vast quantities of nuclear waste but it just be dumped. Into the 80s The AEC considered sub sea bed disposal.

If the waste is encapsulated in concrete or stainless vessels shaped like a screw and dropped mid ocean the vessels will bury themselves in the clay like sediment which is an anoxic environment. Even if the vessels leak the clay like sediment will isolate the nucleotides from the sea water and it life. Eventually through tectonic action the waste will be transported to the continental plates and subducted into the mantel. This method would forever isolate radioactive waste from living creatures. The problem with this method is that the waste is gone and no longer a revenue source for corporations from taxpayers.

What this article does not say is that many of the radionucleotides are isotopes of essential minerals and get incorporated into the body and so decay inside cells right next to DNA and so does its damage slowly. Janet Sherman and J. Mangano, using CDC data determined that in the 10 weeks followint Fukushima the infant mortality rate on the West coast went up 35%.

The air and water masses of the North mix slowly with those of the South. That is why I now live in Ecuador. S. A. has one reactor. The North has 400+.

This is a good comment. This man is very Knowledable about radionuclide problems. I wish they could find a safe way to make sure well contained HighLevel nuclear waste could be placed and sucked into subduction zones. There are tremendous obstacles and complexities in dealing with nuclear waste. Most terrestrial geological stratum risks earthquakes and aquifer contamination. Highlevel waste is ranked as High Level Nuclear waste because, it generates heat and can generate gas and catalyses chemical reactions.

This diagram shows how Nuclear Waste is Categorized

High-Level Nuclear Waste is Spent Fuel, from Nuclear Reactor Fission. It is intensely Radioactive! It contains significant amounts of gamma-radiation emmiters and beta emitters that can interact with containment to generate heat, gasses, and catalyze chemical reactions!

It Generates it's own heat!

Dr. Busby pointed out, how Spent Fuel would generate Helium Gas from the Copper containment vessels, the Finns want to use, in their deep earth, waste-repository. The containers will not be safe.

Plutonium is pyrophoric. It can catch fire on it's own.

We are talking about something that is highly suppressed and has been for 78 years!

I have worked with highly dilited high beta-gamma radionuclides to the tume of 200 billionths of a gram to a kilogram. Radionuclides like Cobalt 60 and Iodine 131.

Even at these very low concentrations, they generate a tremendous amount of heat, in saline solutions.

There are no studies on this because of strength of the Corporate-Nuclear Village and the Government-Nuclear, Military-Industrial-Complexes, in suppressing such information and simply lying about it.

Most of what you and I know, has to be extrapolated.

The amount of lying, cover-up, and information suppression is maddening!

I do not think dumping the High Level waste, in stainless steel, close to a subduction zone is a great idea because the stainless steel containers could be thrown out of that area, by magma and geological activity. The stainless steel is also likely to be ruptured by the intense Radioactive , chemical catalyzing , and heat generating capacity of the containers contents.

If a person stood 30 feet from just 50 pounds of unshielded High Level Nuclear waste, it would kill them in 20 minutes.

How come there's no mention at all, of the DEPLETED URANIUM ammunition and bombs used during the ILLEGAL Yugoslav war leaving behind contamination for all Slavic people's ??? How about the same ammunition used in the M.E. and cursing the Iraq people now for centuries. Where does that dust go when the winds blow ??????????? Pretty soon the whole bloody planet will be contaminated. Do you realise, the radiation detectors had to be re-calibrated after Fukashima because the lowest setting could no longer be achieved, so they just re-calibrated the things by setting the gauge at Zero, though the reading is already higher at that setting. Pretty cool hey ?

How about the CONTINUOS flow of CONTAMINATED water flowing into the Pacific from Fukashima daily, forever contaminating the Pacific ocean from which countless nations derive their food ???????????????????

The screw shaped containers made of the best material dropped close to mid ocean rift zones where the ocean plates are spreading is not near the subduction zones. The containers which would rotate as they descended would screw themselves into the sediment which has little or no oxygen and is clay or clay like. If the vessels leaked it would be into a oxygen free and almost inert environment. The waste could be diluted enough or refrigerated so no critical amount of heat would build up and at ocean depth of several miles the water and sediment is so cold and massive that heat build up would be next to impossible. The constant addition of sediment would build up over time so that when the waste reached the subduction zone it would be encased in shale.or other sedimentary rock. No system is perfect but this appears to be the safest alternative.

I would like to have seen some reliable sources on this. The author must have gotten it somewhere.

I could not find much on nuclear waste except some mainstream fake news.

Generally on a per capita bases the US and Canada are the worst polluters.

The US military is probably the number one, especially with all the depleted uranium they have been scattering all over the world.

*

Fukushima has been swept under the carpet:

"Three of Fukushima's nuclear reactors had a catastrophic core meltdown after they were hit by a tsunami from the Pacific Ocean on March 11, 2011. Global warming was a factor in the intensity of the quake-caused tsunami.

The storm surge knocked out Fukushima's emergency electric generators that keep the cooling water circulating in an emergency. As a result the nuclear rods overheated and caused a meltdown of the nuclear reactors. The flood waters then became contaminated with radiation.

There was nowhere for the contaminated water to go except into the atmosphere, the ground, and the Pacific Ocean. For four years an estimated 71,895 gallons of "low level" radioactive water has been dumped every day into the Pacific Ocean.

Worse news is that Fukushima has another 14.4 million gallons of "highly contaminated" water it has been storing in 7 underground storage facilities. That water is leaking into the Pacific Ocean too.

Another 95,860 gallons of ground water is leaking into the basement of the damaged reactors every day. It has nowhere to go except into the Pacific Ocean, the ground and the atmosphere, too.

TEPCO says it has a three-year plan to build storage tanks, but the water from the mountains above are flowing in at the rate of 35.9 million additional gallons a year. It is out of control and poisoning the planet."

I am not questioning your science. Nuclear waste has been a "temporary problem" that has been ignored for 75 years. What I question is that your article implies that Russia is the main culprit. Is that so, or does it just give US readers a false sense of security that the US has cleaner hands? Just saying Russia, Russia, Russia doesn't seem constructive. What are the statistics on the worst offenders? Wouldn't normalizing US-Russian relations be a positive step in addressing nuclear issues, and preventing a nuclear war? I don't see the US being the adult in the room. Do you?
