Mr. McCain, you criticized Barack Obama for campaigning yesterday, saying: “If a natural disaster is not enough to convince Obama to ease off the political attacks, then what is?” Whereas you seem to think a natural disaster is just the boost your campaign needs.

While the last such disaster—Hurricane Katrina—was killing 1600, we heard nary a word from you or your party for days, and were instead treated to images of the President and yourself enjoying your tasty birthday cake. (You see, Mr. McCain voters can both remember and use a computer.)

We also remember images of bloated bodies, the displaced and the dying.

Now as Gustav skirts the coast, refusing to unleash the spectacular calamity upon which your cynical, fake-news humanitarianism depends, you ask us to believe that you care about our safety and the weather. Because, this time, you postponed a party? Seriously, Mr. McCain?

This time (I do not say “to your bitter disappointment”) the levees are holding. If New Orleans remains safe, your convention strategy is moot. And if New Orleans suffers as before, your party’s past indifference will be rightly blamed and your current posturing rightly exposed.
