With the pending request for statehood by the Palestinians to the U.N. about to be presented to the U.N. Security Counsel for its consideration later this week (and a top story in the news) a poll taken by the Baltimore Sun, albeit not a scientific one (their admission), had 68% of responders saying no to the U.N. recognizing Palestine as a state with 28% saying yes.
Not only was the poll un-scientific i.e. not selecting people randomly (which would give the poll legitimacy and provide some statistical significance) but by taking only those who called in their responses, made it completely misleading and phony, a simple popularity contest that has no real value. It was a complete misrepresentation of what poll sampling is supposedly for; to get within a 3% margin of error reflecting the true population's opinion.
Be that as it may, if such a poll was scientifically and statistically accurate and 2/3's of the people were against the Palestinian's request for statehood by the U.N., what would that say about people's awareness of what is actually occurring in the occupied West Bank and Gaza? And what about the American media bias that favors Israel and the Congressional bias by the lackeys in Congress who genuflect in favor of Israel? Is this not a consequence of their election campaigns being substantially underwritten by well heeled individuals hand picked by AIPAC (the America Israel Public Affairs Committee)?
Israel has been an occupying power exerting its control over the Palestinians since 1967. The state of Israel established by a U.N. mandate in 1948 did not include the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem or the Golan Heights (Syrian territory). All the settlements established in these areas after 1967 are clearly illegal, purely confiscations of Palestinian lands to place mostly Orthodox Jewish settlers in those lands.
Expropriating land owned by others is theft pure and simple.
To digress, the unspeakable horror of the holocaust committed by the Nazis exterminating 6 million innocent Jewish victims should never be forgotten. That unforgivable atrocity against the Jews was a primary factor for establishing the state of Israel by the U.N. in 1948.
But the holocaust should not be used as an inviolable shield and a cover to justify Israel's occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.
Now it seems anyone that criticizes Israeli policies is labeled anti-Semitic.
But this implied immunity conferred on Israel as a result of the Holocaust has caused it to commit its own crimes against humanity and the Palestinians.
All the rest of the world sees it except for the U.S., the Congress, the American main stream media (and if the Baltimore Sun's poll is in some way a reflection of American peoples opinion), the majority of the people have bought into the propaganda elicited by that biased American media.
The Palestinian's appeal to the U.N. for status as a state is an act of desperation as the Israeli leadership has never legitimately considered a negotiated peace with the Palestinians, a two state solution and a return to the 1948 borders established in 1948. If Israel really wanted that peace with the Palestinians, it would have already happened.
The fact is Israel has used its success in its victory in the 1967 war to become an occupying power to act with impunity, protected by the U.S. in defiance of the rest of the world which sees its violations as they truly are.
Propaganda and misinformation by the American media is a disgrace keeping too many American people in the dark regarding Israeli policy and its treatment of the occupied Palestinians.
It's long past time to set the record straight and for Americans to recognize the truth about Israel and its policies over the Palestinians.
