This is #7 in my ongoing series*, "Signs of Sisterhood" about the Women's March on Washington and the many satellite marches that took place on January 21, 2017, on the heels of President Trump's inauguration. I'm keeping this coverage of this historic event going in order to keep the energy and momentum alive during these challenging times.

My guest today is Meryl Ann Butler, artist, activist, author and Managing Editor at OpEdNews.

Joan Brunwasser: Welcome, Meryl Ann. I really enjoyed your photo essay here on OpEdNews, HERstory was made: Sister March in Norfolk, VA. Tell us how and why you got involved in your local Women's March, please.

Meryl Ann Butler: Thanks, Joan! And thanks also for doing this series, it was a great idea, and I am loving reading all of them!

I was disappointed that the Women's March in DC conflicted with my teaching schedule. But then I found out there was a Sister March near me in Norfolk, VA -- in fact, the Norfolk march was organized in five days, a miracle in itself. The organizers were super-human, and I want to thank them here: Holly Carson Christopher, Mari Jacobelly-Dawson, Marianne Pishko Scott, Gaylene Kanoyton and Jeffrey Sargent. What an amazing crew!

The moment I heard about it I knew I would be there. Later I found out that there was a second march in Norfolk, too! And both of them got many times more participants than expected.

I was thrilled to have a chance to experience such unity with my "sistahs" locally and around the globe. The last time I felt that kind of deep connection in a group was in 1968, at a somber march to a memorial service for Martin Luther King. This march, however, felt positively focused, even fun and joyful.

I didn't hear much negativity, which was true to the original mission statement of the March on Washington...the people who initiated this clearly intended for it to be a step forward toward what we want, not a fight against something we didn't want, and that is an important distinction. At the end of the march, people were happy, laughing and clearly inspired!
