Obama refuses to discuss US promotion of neoliberalism with Latin America, saying, "I didn't come here to debate the past. I came here to deal with the future."
But, pro big-business policies has put 85% of El Salvador into poverty, destroying local business. When citizens protested the privatization of water, El Salvador brutally attacked them, charging 14 with "terrorism" in an Orwellian mirror of US repression. The charge carries a maximum term of sixty years in prison for daring to confront big business.
Under international pressure, the 14 were released. One week later, FMLN leader Hector Velasquez was assassinated.
Like Obama's refusal to prosecute war criminals within the United States, it is not surprising his "see no evil" policy extends to Latin America, where the Left has been under violent attack for decades.
The story of the Left in El Salvadore is one example of the anti-imperialist struggles that have led to the victories of the various leftist leaders present at this weekend's summit.
