Obama May Triumph--America Loses

Frank Schaeffer's article, "Obama Will Triumph--So Will America" (and comments by some of my less well informed friends who can be led away from the truth by Obama apologists) prompted the response which follows.  On the surface it might appear that Schaeffer is knowledgeable about Obama.  However, he quotes unproven "facts" which are, in fact, lies, propaganda or partial truths.  Although some are technically true, they are irrelevant given the actions of Obama which rarely coincide with his statements or campaign promises.

Obama has been successful in giving excellent speeches and pretending to be interested in the plight of the middle class and poor.

# "Obama is succeeding." Correct. Obama now has a net worth of $10 million, most of which is from the sale of his books, which we can contrast with his net worth of $700 thousand before his campaign.

Some parts of Schaeffer's article were more in line with my thoughts.   Others had the distinct ring of an Obama apologist such as Earl Ofari Hutchinson who also can't seem to see how little Obama has done for the middle class and poor and for his own race--the human race.   We'll likely now see Obama pretending to be a friend to education, struggling families, democracy, the U.S. Constitution and transparency in government----whatever it takes to convince Democrats that he's not the Wall Street/ Corporatist that he is.

So far, and regrettably, Obama has managed to convince a core of liberal Democrats that he truly represents us even though he "compromises" away all of the hopes of desperate people whose lives are being destroyed by his misdirected actions, aligning his goals with those of the wealthy and striving for the status of the pampered elites.

# "In just 12 short months President Obama : Continued to draw down the misbegotten War in Iraq." While drawing down the Iraq War he was building up his misbegotten war-of-choice in Afghanistan with a much larger U.S. military presence and mercenary army-for-hire. (Xe,aka. Blackwater)

# ""picked the best of several bad choices regarding the war in Afghanistan" which he chose to fight for the billionaires and powerful multi-national corporations and decidedly not for the benefit of Afghanis or the vast majority of Americans. Mercenaries and our regular U.S. forces have been involved in war in the countries of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, and Libya. (Did I miss any?) Obama added 100,000 hired guns to the same number of regular troops to harass, assault, torture and kill civilians in night --time raids and to recklessly kill photo-journalists.

# "Gave a speech supporting gay rights." Yes. Obama gave a speech in support of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and trans-genders and under his administration got rid of the military policy of "Don't ask. Don't tell."

# "Restored America's image around the globe."  Image is a product of advertising and, by its nature, is illusionary. Actions are more tangible than reflections in mirrors.  The respected Pew Research Center states that the U.S. has gone from a Hyper Power to a declining power --Sept.7, 2011.

# "Banned torture of America's prisoners."   On April 19, 2009 Obama refused to prosecute C.I.A. agents for illegally torturing prisoners.   As of January 6, 2010 the Army Field Manual (2006) didn't contain the language of the 1992 A.F.M. which prohibits the use of certain types of torture. Water-boarding has been condemned under United Nations resolutions. Today the military continues the illegal practice of water-boarding and other "enhanced interrogation techniques" under the guise of "research" which apparently is permitted.

# "Stopped the free-fall of the American economy." Obama gave trillions of dollars to help the banks and corporations. That doesn't save the economy. The uncontrollable Federal Reserve Bank gave $16 trillion to preserve the power of the international banks and corporations, not to help Americans keep their homes and jobs at the same time that banks and corporations vastly multiplied their holdings.

# "Put the U.S. squarely back in the bi-lateral international community." What? Rewarded international corporate greed? Yes.

# "Put the U.S.A. squarely into the middle of the international effort to stop global warming." Obama went to the meetings in Copenhagen, Denmark.    He offered no further commitment in reducing U.S. emissions beyond a 4% reduction goal to be achieved by 2050.   He brokered a deal with Wen Jaibao, the Chinese Premier, disappointing most developing countries' leaders with the meager goals presented by the leader of the world's second largest polluter and contributor to global warming.    Obama spoke briefly and did not sign the accords of the international meeting.

# "Stood up for educational reform." Frequently, Obama has attacked public education. He continued Bush's plan to privatize public education and continued Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program--more testing and no additional money to public education. He then instituted the equally ineffective "Race to the Top" which provides additional funding only to the "winners" and is not based upon need.

# "Won a Nobel Peace Prize." How does one win a Nobel Peace Prize after being in office for a mere 37 days? This seems more like a bribe in an attempt to encourage Obama to not be as bad for the world as G.W. Bush was.

# "Moved the trial of terrorists back into the American judicial system of checks and balances." Then to the military courts or to eastern Europe for more imprisonment and torture.
