The latest news from Ukraine, as reported by George Eliason, is that Lugansk just gave Kiev an ultimatum to implement the Geneva agreement by the 29th at 2 pm. The different Ukrainian "republics" finally got together and are putting together a unified army and government. That's a big deal.
Recently Dimitry Yarosh the Leader of Pravy Sektor, Trizyb who is the Assistant Secretary of Defense, moved his office to Dnepropetrovsk in order to "keep a better eye on the South-East." Yarosh called on all Pravy Sektor and the new National Guard made up of Maidan radicals and Pravy Sektor leaders to mobilize. And when the interim president ordered the start-up of miliitary operations in South-east Ukraine, mercenaries employed by the oligarch Kolimoisky joined them.[tag]
This morning in a live statement starting at 1 a.m. Dimitry Yarosh declared:"The dream of millions of Ukrainians is now realized. The Glorious Bandera Army is crossing the Dneiper River. We will wipe out the Russian disease."
The self defense force in South-East Ukraine that until now has kept the Kiev junta at bay numbers only about 2000 people with about 100 automatic weapons and a few dozen shotguns. After hearing Yarosh's threat, the people's mayor of Slovyansk, Viacheslav Ponomariov, stated the position of his electorate clearly: "If the Bandera attack us, they will find an even larger Stalingrad than in Russia." Stalingrad is known as the biggest single battle in human history, having cost 1.5 million people during World War II.
The mayor ordered people to stay at home, however most came out to defend their city. With only sticks as weapons they were attacked by helicopter gun ships. In the Slavyansk area almost 40 people are reported dead and at least as many injured. One woman was shot after a Pravy Sektor fighter entered her home. However, the townspeople repelled the attack, recovering explosives, American night vision goggles, and foreign weapons including a German MG-42, a vintage weapon nick-named Hitler's buzz saw, which is both an anti-infantry and anti-aircraft weapon.
Slovyansk defenders also found hollow point bullets which are a clear violation international law. These bullets are so lethal that the Geneva Convention does not allow their use on the battle field. Recently, the Obama administration purchased 750 million rounds of these outlawed bullets....
In other news, Kiev residents report that both the NSA and the CIA have opened offices in the Ukrainian capital to help set up the country's new security apparatus. All this to fight a Russian presence that does not exist. The OSCE mission in Donetsk has seen no evidence of a Russian troop presence.
Meanwhile, since the junta took charge every worker and pensioner has taken a large pay cut, with 30% of what is left taken off the top to pay National Guard and Pravy Sektor salaries and buy the bullets that are now fired at them.
The Ukrainian minister of Culture, Yevhen Nischuk, introduced a bill to replace the holiday com-memorating the end of the Nazi occupation, with a July 3rd commemoration of the Proclamation of the State of Ukraine in 1941 by Yuroslav Stetsko and Stepan Bandera.
The last straw according to the people in Slovyansk was the attack on Easter, which is the highest holiday on the Eastern Orthodox calendar and had been chosen for the truce for that reason.
Meanwhile, in Washington, State Department spokesperson Jan Psaki brands the Ukrainians that do not recognize the coup government in Kiev as terrorists, deflect journalists' questions:
QUESTION:But you wouldn't -- but when they say that these are -- is that really the right definition of what these kind of operations should be, or who they're targeting? I mean, these people aren't terrorists in the sense like they're launching terrorist attacks, would you say?
MS. PSAKI:I'm not sure it matters what they're called.
Eastern Ukrainians initially welcomed Western journalists hoping that both events and the driving forces behind them would be reported, but propaganda such as this has led to a less than warm welcome.
The people in Donbass wanted peace and to live normal lives. The Kiev junta broke the Geneva agreement almost as soon as it was signed. According to the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, even Secretary Kerry privately expressed surprise at Kiev's failure to keep the agreement they signed.
As for Lugansk, it merely wants to be safe from the government and the private armies that promised to wipe out the Moskal (Russians). They don't particularly want to be part of the Russian Federation, however, they are being threatened with American mercenaries from both the govern-ment and various private armies. Tymoshenko is putting her own private army together and Pravy Sektor is killing and kidnapping across the region.
