Flag od NATO
The center of the universe is certainly not Newport, Wales, but then again with NATO, their heads of state and some 60 countries meeting there starting tomorrow, figuratively speaking it may very well be.
I don't know the specific agenda of the summit but Ukraine will certainly be at the top and probably ISIS in Iraq as well what with its merciless beheadings of journalists grabbing the headlines.
But Ukraine and its status vis--vis NATO should be numero uno up for discussion and debate.
It might be foolhardy to speculate what the outcome of the NATO gathering will be but its worth looking at the crisis in Ukraine beyond the propaganda and lies we get from the US government and the corporate media, the unofficial organ of the state.
First let's begin by dispelling the nonsense we've been hearing of a Russian invasion of Ukraine that's been spouted as the gospel by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, NATO Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the US government, the MSM as well as the assorted neo-con talking heads spewing their venom demonizing Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The fact is there was no Russian military invasion of southeastern Ukraine.
Poroshenko's Ukrainian army along with his new national guard composed of neo-Nazi thugs that invaded southeastern Ukraine in June marauding and indiscriminately killing ethnic Russian speaking people may be on the run, surrendering, deserting, going over to the other side and joining with their eastern Ukrainian brethren in arms, leaving behind their tanks, artillery and other military hardware to the farmers, miners and factory men-many of them ex-Soviet army trained veterans-who took up arms defending their homeland in the Donbass. They've just taken the tanks and military hardware and turned it on the "invaders". They may be old Soviet made armaments but they didn't come over the border with troops from Russia.
So the US sponsored and clandestinely driven proxy war in eastern Ukraine is not going the way it wanted.
The neo-con US regime expected its provocations against Putin would propel him to invade Ukraine. He didn't take the bait.
Instead he' sent a convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian aide to the ethnic Russian people in southeastern Ukraine defending their homeland from the assault authorized by Kiev. This convoy was initially portrayed as a "Russian invasion" but this ruse was easily dispelled by OSCE-Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe-observers who saw no evidence of an invasion force crossing the border only a convoy of trucks delivering aide to the inhabitants.
But the despite the phony claims of a Russian "invasion" there's still talk of new sanctions on Russia, there's the dispatch of additional NATO troops into the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on a rotating basis, US Navy guided missile destroyers are shown entering the Black Sea, and yesterday Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced a billion dollar defense fund for this increased military presence in the area all indicating the relentless war like provocations aimed at Russia will not end anytime soon.
But consider; winter is coming. Europe and particularly Germany depend on an unrestricted flow of natural gas from Russia. Germany has huge trade and commerce with Russia. One would think economic self interest would persuade the Germans to act to protect those interests.
Yet with Uncle Sam always lurking ominously over German Chancellor Angela Merkel's shoulder who knows if she'll be able to fend off intense US pressure and continue to go along with Obama and the mad neo-con rush for war with Russia.
