China's live animal markets sell wolf pups, scorpions, bamboo rats, squirrels, foxes, civet cats, raccoon dogs, salamanders, turtles, crocodiles (including crocodile tail, intestines, and tongue) and ostriches for human consumption. Nothing has been learned from SARS caused by the same wildlife markets.

You would think that a deadly epidemic would cause a reconsideration of wildlife and exotic animal eating habits

Likewise, the way that the climate is spinning into turbo-charged destruction, you'd think we might reconsider digging up, burning, and subsidizing fossil fuels.

But we don't, do we?

We're on the same side, Martha. I'm just heartsick about the lovely planet and its life forms we are exsanguinating.

Lowei, or foreigner in Chinese, do not grasp the reasons why these exotic animals are sought after for consumption. Mythical traditions espouse the eating of powdered Tiger bone to make a man as strong as them, or shark fin soup, makes you agile, aggressive and unbeatable. Government officials has done little-to-nothing to discourage these habits and even partake in them.

It must also be remembered that tens-of-millions of Chinese died in the not to distant starvation times, of Mao's "Great Leap Forward" movement. Where officials were skewing statistics to make it appear they exceeded estimated quotas. I had Chinese people tell me of family members eating grass and even mud to satiate their hunger, but ended up dying from constipation.

As for the Hankou Fish Market that is blamed for this coronavirus release is questionable, as there are several early infections not attributed to it, since they didn't visit it. There are 2 Bio-weapons labs in Wuhan, just across the river that may have unintentionally released it.

I also just read an article about how the bat population of Central China do not have this disease, but Lower Yangtze River fruit bats do; that also migrate to Ryukyu Island, Japan; where there is another Bio-weapons lab. Possibly a variant virus was implanted in bats just before the Autumn migration.

It being an unusually warm Fall for central China and a bumper harvest had farmers leaving much fruit on trees, had these normally migrating south-west, to alter their course to Wuhan, sniffing the aroma of ripened fruit on the prevailing winds. Once there they copulated with local bats that created the mutation. The tons of fecal matter released over aquatic farms adjacent to these orchards rained down on the fish below to infect them. So, it's not just the consumption of exotic animals that may have led to the spreading of this disease, but an intentional release by a government.

Could this also be the reason for the pi-flu virus having China cull over 50% of its pig population?

China should certainly shutter its exotic animal markets - for many reasons. But there is still a lot we do not know about the origins of this virus. As Josh Mittledorf wrote in his article this week, it demands an investigation. It could have been intentionally released or accidentally released. It could be sabotage. The Russia/China silk road trade pact is a major threat to US dominance after all. We don't know. All we do know at this juncture is that if China is quarantining whole cities this virus is far more dangerous to human life than a normal flu.

Or a dry run on population containment. Hard to know the truth.

Some news outlets have said exposing the eating habits behind the coronavirus is "racist." Moreover, they actually say we need to have respect for "traditional" medicines like rhino horn. What???? Animal abuse is animal abuse--there is no back story of racism or "respect for other cultures."

Yes this is quite true, but if Humanity is ever to endure Justice for it's many crimes, it will have to endure this as well.
