Senator Lindsey Graham juxtaposed with President Donald Trump congratulating him for assassination of Iran General Qassam Suleimani
As we've learned this morning last night President Trump ordered the drone strike that assassinated Iranian Major General Qassim Suleimani the head of the elite Iranian Quds Force-part of the IRGC, Islamic Revolution Guard Force-traveling in a convoy outside Baghdad's, Iraq International airport.
The Pentagon said the strike was on the personal "direction" of Trump and was "aimed at deterring future Iranian attacks". Secretary of State Mike Pompeo weighed in calling the assassination of Suleimani a "defensive action" saying "The US remains committed to de-escalation"-how's that for Orwellian type double speak.
From Iran upon hearing of Suleimani's assassination Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomenei promised, "Harsh revenge" warning "revenge awaits the criminals who stained their hands in his blood".
In Iran thousands of protesters marched in Tehran and other cities decrying the assassination of Suleimani while chanting "Down with the US" with some protest banners reciting Khamanei's words of "Harsh revenge".
Iraqi Prime Minister Abdul Mahdi said the assassination of Suleimani was a "flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty". The US State Department this morning called on all US citizens to depart Iraq immediately.
To say the least it is a reckless move by Trump.
Here's a few select comments by politicos to Suleimani's murder ordered by Trump:
Both Dems and Repubs in Congress weighed in with war monger Senator Lindsey Graham hailing it as a "bold action" by Trump as a "direct response to Iranian aggression orchestrated by General Suleimani and his proxies". While Graham's bloodthirsty partner Senator Marco Rubio-now that John McCain has left the scene-called Suleimani "an active enemy combatant" and "more dangerous than al Qaeda's Osama bin Laden and Islamic State ISIS Chief al Baghdadi".
As for the Dems presidential hopefuls here's their response.
Joe Biden called the strike "a hugely escalatory move in an already dangerous region" that will likely bring "future attacks by Iran" further stating, "President Trump just tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox".
Bernie Sanders said, "The president's dangerous escalation brings us closer to another dangerous war in the Middle East that could cost countless lives and trillions of dollars".
Elizabeth Warren called the strike "reckless" that "our priority must be to avoid another costly war" though saying "Suleimani was a murderer, responsible for the deaths of thousands, including hundreds of Americans".
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the strike was issued without consultation of Congress saying Washington "cannot afford to have tensions escalate to the point of no return".
