Department of Homeland Security chief Alejandro Mayorkes testifying before a Congressional hearing April 22, 2022
Is there free speech in America? The first amendment to the Constitution reads, "Congress shall make no law respecting establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances".
Freedom of speech will be the focus here and most censorship of it should be considered illegal.
Yet today under the Department of Homeland Security speech deemed "disinformation" is to be fought.
Yesterday at a congressional hearing DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkes testified his department created a "disinformation governance board". Its platform; countering "misinformation related to homeland security, focused specifically on irregular immigration and Russia".
Let's remember social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook accused the Russians of interfering in the 2016 presidential election supposedly helping to put Trump in the White House.
As we know the "Trumpster" has been banned from Twitter though billionaire Elon Musk who recently purchased Twitter for some $44 billion says he wants to restore freedom of speech on the platform, particularly conservative voices-and one supposes reinstating Trump .
His purchase of Twitter seems to have spurred the Biden administration to counter what it considers "disinformation".
