Instead of Explaining Greta Thunberg, Debate Her Claims

What is Greta Thunberg's superpower?

She obviously has one, if not more. Your average sixteen-year-old doesn't start successful global activist movements, address UN Climate Action Summits, and have those addresses go viral as death metal videos.

Critics slam Thunberg as everything from "mentally ill" (a claim which got one Fox News guest blacklisted), to naive pawn in a well-funded propaganda operation, to just plain annoying teenager.

I think those critics miss the point. If they disagree on the facts, they should dispute those facts rather than focus on Thunberg at all. But since the focus IS on her, let's take a closer look.

Thunberg herself describes her autism-related diagnoses as among the aforementioned superpowers. "I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, OCD and selective mutism," she said in a Tedx Talk. "That basically means I only speak when I think it's necessary. Now is one of those moments."

Thunberg as pawn isn't as dismissive as it sounds, but it doesn't ring very true either. Yes, she and her efforts enjoy support from well-funded organizations and individuals, but there's no reason to believe they randomly plucked her from the global mass of teenagers and set her in motion. She attracted their notice by taking action. They didn't make a winner, they saw a winner and decided to bet big on that winner.

As for her age, that's a double-edged sword. Her supporters can position her as wise beyond her years, her opponents as too young to yet possess wisdom at all.

Personally, I think Thunberg's superpower is that she's a great actor.

No, that's not intended as an insult. And no, I'm not just pulling the idea out of thin air.

She comes from a theatrical family. Her mother's an opera singer. Her father's an actor. Her grandfather's an actor and director. She's spent her entire life surrounded by the idea of performance as primary.

Formally trained or not, naturally gifted or not, she's clearly mastered the art of holding an audience's attention while she tells us what she thinks we need to hear.

So: IS what she's telling us what we need to hear? Does she have her facts straight? Is her understanding of the science accurate? Are the models she trusts for climate predictions sound?

With or without Greta Thunberg, those are the questions we need answers to.

Someone hand the lady her Oscar and let's get back to work.

Experts Warn We Have Only 12 Years Left Until They Change The Timeline On Global Warming Again

WORLD Climate experts have solemnly warned that we only have twelve years left until they change the dates on global warming again.

"If we don't take action, then in 12 years we will have to explain why the world hasn't ended and come up with a new number," one UN scientist warned. "This is a very serious threat, and we urge everyone to hand control of the economy to the government immediately before we have no more time left to change the timeline again."

The scientific consensus is that roughly 10-12 years from now, the world will be flooded with new doomsday predictions. This can all be avoided if we overhaul the economy and become socialists, according to non-political, unbiased sciencey type guys.

"Should we not change our ways, our old predictions will melt, dangerously raising the chance of us having to move the goalposts again," said Al Gore. "Do you really want me to write another book, film another movie, and go on another tour in my private jet just because you dingbats couldn't be bothered to alter your lifestyles? I don't think so. Let's all get on board with this 12-year figure, or we'll have to push back the date again."

On earth day in 1970:

Harvard biologist George Wald estimated that "civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind."

"Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make," Paul Ehrlich confidently declared in the April 1970 Mademoiselle. "The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years."

"Most of the people who are going to die in the greatest cataclysm in the history of man have already been born," wrote Paul Ehrlich in a 1969 essay titled "Eco-Catastrophe! "By"[1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s."

6. Ehrlich sketched out his most alarmist scenario for the 1970 Earth Day issue of The Progressive, assuring readers that between 1980 and 1989, some 4 billion people, including 65 million Americans, would perish in the "Great Die-Off."

"It is already too late to avoid mass starvation," declared Denis Hayes, the chief organizer for Earth Day, in the Spring 1970 issue of The Living Wilderness.

In January 1970, Life reported, "Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support"the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution"by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half"."

Paul Ehrlich chimed in, predicting in his 1970 that "air pollution"is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone." Ehrlich sketched a scenario in which 200,000 Americans would die in 1973 during "smog disasters" in New York and Los Angeles.

Harrison Brown, a scientist at the National Academy of Sciences, published a chart in Scientific American that looked at metal reserves and estimated the humanity would totally run out of copper shortly after 2000. Lead, zinc, tin, gold, and silver would be gone before 1990.

Sen. Gaylord Nelson wrote in Look that, "Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct."

Kenneth Watt warned about a pending Ice Age in a speech. "The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years," he declared. "If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age."

In 2008 Al Gore said that artic ice would be gone in 5 years.

Top 10 Reasons Why Greta Thunberg Is a Fraud. Very nice presentation but I do not agree with the motive. The Left simply does not have such power to organize it. I think the rich have created it to frighten, manipulate, and control the people all over the world.

Ah, the "consider the source" logical fallacy, a.k.a. the genetic fallacy. The genetic fallacy (also known as the fallacy of origins or fallacy of virtue) is a fallacy of irrelevance that is based solely on someone's or something's history, origin, or source rather than its current meaning or context.

Ah, indeed. And who do you designate to properly divine the correct current meaning or context? Or can the claimed current meaning or context be an attempt to reverse engineer the conclusions you desire.

There is nothing much to tell. Particularly in an argument containing neither meaning nor context.

She's not picking on Greta, she's referring to an article that uses that as a contrast to the ill-founded adoration of Greta. What you obviously are doing is avoiding the actual points made in the article. Unless you weren't making any point at all.

Vierotchka is right. You, Becky and Aleksander are "shooting the messenger." That is a cop out, deal with the message. This is not about Greta, this is about what she is saying; this is about what the message is.

The message: Climate Change/Global Warming will suck all life out of this planet if the people who can do something about it don't quit sitting on their fu*king thumbs and get up out of their god damn chairs and DO SOMETHING ... NOW!!

Yes, Becky is picking on Greta by linking an article that picks on Greta. The article misses the whole damn point; its not about "Poor Countries," its about ALL countries.

From Becky's "Poor Countries" article: Thunberg seems unaware, however, that in poor and developing countries, carbon emissions are more a lifeline to children than they are a threat.

The point being missed is, Carbon emissions are a threat not just to children; at this point, Carbon emissions are a threat to homo sapiens, Mother Nature and all her beautiful creatures, and ... life on the WHOLE DAMN PLANET!

You have been a victim of huge propaganda produced by the rich to control people all over the world. I am not saying that people do not contribute to global warming but this not significantly. We are much worse in polluting the world and this needs to change. I posted above a video explaining everything, which you obviously did not watch. I did watch some of it. The first 3 and 1/2 minutes were right on point. After that I saw where it was going. I don't agree with it.

People are playing dice with this absolutly being a crisis of an issue. Gambling on the future of life is nothing but being stupid. Having said that, it don't really matter. It is too late and nothing can be done.

It is even not close to nothing to be done. I have learned so far that such a campaign can be started only by those who have money. In this particular case, those who have money are the most responsible for global warming. So are they campaigning against themselves?

No, they cheat on people to control them. When you take a look at this society, you can be sure that nothing but the conspiracy exists, which deceives people to make them sheep.

But we are responding to the message. We're responding to the message's messenger about her message. We're saying specific things about her message, not her. If we were shooting the messenger, we'd say things about her looks or how she talks or that she flunked science, even though she probably didn't. But you get the idea.

I think Don's point is that you can't always trust dire doomsday predictions from people, something he proved beyond a doubt with numerous historical, and sometimes hysterical, examples. Paul Ehrlich and others completely disregarded the ability of people to change, adapt, learn and invent. We could spend trillions reducing CO2 to supposedly acceptable levels just to find out it made no difference; that there were other mechanisms at work we didn't understand at the time.

My point is that one needs to be careful about who one targets with demands, which would apply to all sorts of things, not just CO2. Realize the level of misery so many are living with and how much they'd love to have something as simple as an electric stove so they could cook and eat without choking on wood smoke. What if they could've had their stove Greta? What if the whole CO2 thing was for naught?

"get up out of their god damn chairs and DO SOMETHING ... NOW!!"

Yeah what exactly? Many think nuclear power is the only way to master CO2 levels, but Greta's not a fan and I'm guessing you wouldn't stand for it either, David. Ironic that the people who scared us out of continued development are the same ones now telling us to get out of our cars and get on a bike, usually while riding around in private jets.

Also ironic is believing in nonsensical 9/11 theories based on fringe 'science', while at the same time embracing climate change theories because well, that's because there's a the consensus of the best and brightest on it, right? Do you even realize that AE911truth is analogous to the handful of climate denial scientists?

Why do you and Greta hate the poor?

Greta and you would most likely frown on the ability of a poor area of a poor country to say .... install a natural gas power generating plant that would transform the lives of the local population from that of dung-burning, wash tub using, polluted river bathing -- into something resembling what you and I take for granted in America, in even the poorest of neighborhoods.

That may not be conscious hatred, but it is certainly dismissive elitism.

But here's the main reason we should all be criticizing Greta's message. She's misrepresenting the conclusions of the climate scientist community:

"Let us focus on an easier issue and ask whether the latest IPCC report even in the (as usual) distorted summary for policymakers says anything remotely similar to Thunberg's 11-years-left-till-Apocalypse-unless-we-act claim. Unsurprisingly, the summary, biased as it is in favor of alarm, says no such thing. Thunberg seems to be wildly misinterpreting the statement on page 6 of the summary that "global warming is likely to reach 1.5┬░C between 2030 (till which date 11 years remain) and 2052 if it continues to increase at the current rate." There is no implication in the summary that this extent of warming may cause catastrophic planetary consequences. ......

...... The real problem with the climate change activist sensation Greta Thunberg is not that she is 16 years old. Rather, it is that she is a clueless fanatic who is considered brave and enlightened for promoting a cause that almost everyone agrees with without any study or reflection. And it is the duty of anyone who does not want clueless fanaticism to determine policies affecting billions to call it out as such."

Becky, the IPCC report is part of the problem. "Unsurprisingly, the summary, biased as it is in favor of alarm, says no such thing." The report is not biased in favor of alarm. The IPCC is biased in favor of not causing alarm. It is a consensus report that waters down the real story. Virtually everybody takes it as the "official" word on what is going on with global warming. It is way too conservative, it is much worse.

What's Not in the Latest Terrifying IPCC Report? The "Much, Much, Much More Terrifying" New Research on Climate Tipping Points

The "scariest thing about the IPCC Report" is the fact that "it's the watered down, consensus version. The latest science is much, much, much more terrifying."

The feedback loops are already churning which are reinforcing themselves and will continue to do so for way too long to save us and at least most of life on this planet from extinction. There is no way to put the brakes on the feedback loops. It is a done deal. Greta knows what she is talking about. Yet apparently, even she does not realize its too late, its over.

Another thing, even if we drastically reduced burning fossil fuels tomorrow morning, the globe would heat even faster. Check out "global dimming."

Daniel Geery: The specific problems, not to mention the systemic ones, are not even addressed by the IPCC or the Green New Deal, nor even "institutionalized climatologists."

The fact that our planet is getting warmer even though aerosols are cooling it down at higher rates than previously thought brings us to a Catch-22 situation: Global efforts to improve air quality by developing cleaner fuels and burning less coal could end up harming our planet by reducing the number of aerosols in the atmosphere, and by doing so, diminishing aerosols' cooling ability to offset global warming.

David, do you think governments are idiots who do not have contacts with sciences? If this is true, governments will act way before such movies are produced. It would be the job of scientists and not of the propaganda machine. This is nothing else but a high-level manipulation of people made to frighten them and make them obedient followers of authorities. Your problem is you do not get what the rich are capable off to gain control over people.

Aleksandar, "Global Dimming?" You said, "This is nothing else but a high-level manipulation of people made to frighten them and make them obedient followers of authorities." Were you aware of the science that ties global dimming together with global warming and what that means? I would be very surprised if you did. Does it frighten you to learn this? It won't frighten people because just about nobody has ever even heard of this.

I watched the documentary and can easily say it is a forgery by the style and message. I am still not sure what "Global Dimming" is and do not care because I know who produces such movies and why!

Let us suppose we are all doomed. Who might have the interest to spend money informing us about that? The only logical answer is, those who plan to control us after the doomsday:-)

And yes, you presented them well in the linked article. But they were never able to control us entirely, and they never will. Once people accept equal human rights, which I propose here in OEN, the elite will become equal to everybody else and nothing more.

I think you meant to link to this article, right?

Here's a link to the actual study you're talking about.

"There is no way to put the brakes on the feedback loops"

No way? The very study you cite for this conclusion doesn't agree with that:

"The Stabilized Earth trajectory requires deliberate management of humanity's relationship with the rest of the Earth System if the world is to avoid crossing a planetary threshold. We suggest that a deep transformation based on a fundamental reorientation of human values, equity, behavior, institutions, economies, and technologies is required."

Gosh, with all this doomsday talk and "WWII style mobilization" phrasing, shouldn't we be doing another 'Manhattan Project', ramping up nuclear energy around the world? That's the "technologies" the authors should be coming out for explicitly. At least they implied it. Earth to Mankind: "Use the force. Use your nukes."

As for global dimming, the makers of the BBC documentary were apparently unaware that it's been reversing since 1990:

The efforts of industrialised nations to cut smog pollution has had a bizarre side-effect accelerating global warming.

New data show that after years of getting smoggier, our skies have become clearer since about 1990. And one effect has been to allow more solar radiation to reach the surface of the Earth.

The phenomenon known as "global dimming" has gone into reverse, according to research by Martin Wild at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science in Zurich, Switzerland, and been replaced by "global brightening" (Science. vol 308, p 847). "There is no longer a dimming to counteract the greenhouse effect," he told New Scientist.

It's not really a factor anymore. We gradually reduced it without the catastrophe warned about in the BBC Doc. Now we just need to work on CO2.

So don't panic and give up, David. Push for nuclear power. It's the one best thing you can do to avoid a catastrophic future for your children and theirs.

I can't see where I actually linked to anything, but that is the article I quoted from. And, I don't see where I talked about a study. The study you link to I have not seen before.

From your comment: "Wild's new data assembled from measurements of surface radiation made round the globe show a widespread reduction in aerosols in the atmosphere since around 1990."

I will buy that. But, as aerosols have been reduced, warming has increased as the dimming has been reduced. The article did not say how much global dimming is still in effect and if we continue to reduce aerosols how much more warming will there be.

You cite this from the article: "There is no longer a dimming to counteract the greenhouse effect." But to say there is "no longer a dimming" is to say there are no longer any aerosols in the atmosphere. But of course there are still aerosols, we have not gotten rid of all aerosols. The article recognizes that with, "and now the mask appears to be coming off." So, there is more yet to "come off." But how much?

Without looking into it right now, I will guess that effectively, there is still a significant masking effect in effect affecting global temperatures. :)

I think this issue goes something like this. IF we -- we won't -- start a Manhattan Project II to cut back our CO2 emissions the Globe will warm faster. CO2 remains in the atmosphere a very long time. So any cutbacks in CO2 emissions will still add to what is already there, albeit add more slowly than before, but still they will add to the "greenhouse" warming effect which will heat things more quickly. And, if we reduce burning fossil fuels to emit less CO2, that will reduce aerosols and global dimming which will also warm things faster. Increased warming from increasing quantities of CO2 combined with less global dimming is a double whammy.

Now add to that, the feedback loops are already starting to churn. Permafrost is thawing releasing trapped methane which is a much stronger greenhouse gas than CO2. Also, far northern lakes and the arctic ocean are warming which is also allowing previously trapped methane to escape. Albedo -- portion of reflected light -- of the arctic ice is diminishing with the melting of arctic ice which warms the arctic ocean even faster. As more and more methane is released by the thawing permafrost and warming waters the heating of the globe will continue to speed up faster and faster with no way to stop it. The engines behind the now runaway heat train are the feedback loops which will only continue to reinforce themselves over and over again.

The only way to stop the feedback loops would be to cool the globe. We can't stop the globe from heating, so I seriously doubt we can cool it. Any ideas?

I do not deny we people are something responsible for global warming even though nature changes on its own. We can see it through ice melting. But I did not notice, as the result of it, the sea level raised one inch in all my life. In the worst-case scenario, part of the seashore will be flooded, and then people will cope with it. (I hope before it happens)

But Greta says we have only ten years to change, or we will be doomed. You repeated it after her, bringing panic to the people. This is not true. It is supposed to help the rich to impose rules on the whole world, which will slow down the development of civilization, enabling the elite to rule the world more. This is all that it is about.

I pretty much agree with that Aleksander. But I think it's a little more complicated regarding the motivations for all the distortions and scare-mongering. It's not as simple as thinking "the rich" are all acting in concert to "slow down the development."

The worldwide left on balance opposes capitalism, growth and individualist freedom. They use climate doomsdaying as a tool to institute collectivism. The same left that hobbled our nuclear fission industry would oppose nuclear fusion, should it somehow become an actual source of safe, clean and boundless energy. They're all on about wind and solar because they know not much economic growth is going to come from only them. These are not primarily rich people. But 'collectively', they have much more power than you give them credit for. When more than half our young people would choose socialism over capitalism that's a force to be reckoned with.

But I think you are correct in that a smaller group of elitists seek the kind of power and control, and personal wealth, that comes with "slowing down the development." They're profiting greatly, precisely from bad-mouthing profit. It's like they're 'short-selling' humanity, simultaneously advocating for things that will ensure its decline.

The rich are interested in controlling the world. If this requires a slow down of the development of the world, then be it. Also, they manipulate the left entirely, but this is another story. The global warming movement is entirely their initiative.

Are you saying they created a global warming "hoax?" Or are you saying they have taken global warming and used it to their advantage?

The rich are the most responsible for global warming and they exaggerated it to use it to their advantage.

Here is what scientists who do not have access to media think.

"I can't see where I actually linked to anything, but that is the article I quoted from. And, I don't see where I talked about a study. The study you link to I have not seen before."

You quote from an article essentially about a study on feedback loops, but for some reason don't link to the article or even read the study. So naturally you weren't aware that the study didn't claim that "its too late, its over," as you do.

This is the same thing Greta's doing -- misrepresenting scientists and their conclusions, and inserting undue drama and instilling fear, especially among the young and impressionable.

You don't appear to be exactly young, and you've given up. Imagine what 12 year olds are concluding from listening to Greta!

How is it you think you can embrace one part of a study that talks about the potential danger of feedback loops, and then edit their conclusions to swap out hope for hopelessness?

How can "a dull and simple lad" know better than these highly credentialed scientists? Can I have what you're having please?

Becky, I have figured out you can think and you are rational. But the difference in how we think is, in this case, we are picking science and scientists on opposite ends of the science.

I did quote from an article to make a point, but I did not get my education about feedback loops from that article and the study; I got my knowledge from other places. When I said, "I think this issue goes something like this," and then spelled out what the deal is, that was my way of explaining what is going on; that was my way of explaining what the science says.

Do you have something to disprove what I posited other than scientific "opinion?" When I say "opinion" I mean the same thing as the the IPCC report, its conclusions were a consensus "opinion." Climate scientists who realize the game is over say too many experts hold back in telling it like it is and that the situation is much worse than it is; they don't want to be alarmists.

You are right, I don't appear to be exactly young. But, I'm older than I look. :)

"How can a dull and simple lad know better than credentialed scientists?" Becky, let me explain. Being dull and simple is the key to life. Don't argue with me, that is the way it is.

By the way, I am not really David Watts. I just wish I could be like David Watts.

Here is a comment I just left on another article.

Reply to David Wieland:

"It should not require belief; if the climate were actually changing rapidly and dangerously anywhere, scientifically valid data should show that. That's what people should seek, not repeated admonishment to "listen to the science" without ever revealing data but pretending that model projections are real data. We're being subjected to an alarming level of fear-mongering these days; it's damaging the mental health of many; and it's especially shameful to be inflicting such worries on our children."

There is plenty of scientifically valid data readily available. You say there is an "alarming level of fear-mongering." Is it fearmongering with the situation being so dire? Damaging the mental health of many and worrying our children? With what, the truth? Would it be better to hold back the absolute truth so nobody was alarmed? That would be like watching TV in the living room with a fire in the basement and telling your children don't worry, its just fine here in the living room, it has only heated up a tiny bit.

You should spend a little bit of time and look for proof of global warming.

Here are several things I simply chose quickly, there is a lot of stuff online:

I will finish this fruitful discussion by telling that ice has been malting every year from ever. Also, every year, nature has been producing new ice. Yes, in this particular moment, the melting is faster, and nobody denies it.

Scientists do not agree about how significant is the influence of people on global warming. But let's take that we people are the only reason for it, then yes we should change and we will.

We still do not need to panic because according to scientists changes are not that significant to panic. Media and their owners want us to fear because they have a hidden agenda and want to profit from our deception.

I have witnessed for a while that only the rich have the power to start propaganda on the world level. Now, whenever I see it, I ask myself what they want. It is not hard to find the answer when you know who is behind it.

Here I have presented their recent successful cheatings of people.
