India's Cabinet secretariat has a secret division known as the Research and Analysis wing which monitors worldwide threats and intelligence that matters to India. They comprise of officers from all walks of society besides IAS, IFS and RAS Government Officers who handle their respective agents.
The R&AW is mythical in terms of perception as it is widely shown in Indian movies performing covert operations. The truth however is that that both officers and their agents have immense power which is understated and one that is very difficult and complex to identify because of the relationships they have cultivated over time. Most officers are elderly and well-dressed gentlemen, some extremely stylish in designer clothing.
However, never underestimate the power of an R&AW officer. They are basically unsocial and do not make friends easily. They can be rather unsocial people with a different interior. They can be your doctor next door or a neighbour or a friend and you will never find out unless told. However, word does spread and civilians do know of existing R&AW officers but it is best that they are left alone. They are true gentlemen, fierce patriots and can be deadly dangerous if you rub them the wrong way.
They operate in Embassies, in special squads and in safe houses that serve as offices which are difficult to identify-They are officers of high status who simply are known as staff of secretaries but the truth is that the R&AW is one of the highest and most powerful intelligence agencies in the world. They are tech-savvy and extremely sharp. In most cases some are gentle but are extremely feared for various reasons. But unlike films and fiction they do not jump off rooftops and race cars but they are well trained and can bring you down with a couple of Krav-Maga (An Israeli form of Martial Art) moves, irrespective of their age. True to their faith-Serious officers and agents live a very secretive life.
The R&AW has an elite division which even other officers are unaware of, a counter intelligence division and those who are at their peak are members of the National security council and work directly under the National Security Advisor of India who reports to the Prime Minister on a direct and daily basis.
