Every time I try to write something about the election, it's obsolete the next day. I'm ok with that, because I understand the times: it's the Attention Age, not the Information Age. Terror gets more votes than reason. And here we are.

But this is getting too crazy. So I'll grind out some of the goings-on, which you know about already, and then see if my take on all this diverges in some interesting way from what just about anybody might reasonably expect.

The GOP controls the Executive and Legislative Branches of government and has every chance of capturing the Judiciary for generations to come. The Supreme Court will be such that any dispute about the election will be resolved in favor of the GOP.

The House is taking reasonable, if milquetoast, positions, safe in the knowledge that the Senate will block them at every turn, and therefore allowed to persist by the oligarchy both chambers work for, providing the illusion of functining democracy. Big money is confident in a GOP victory. So the Democrats can be as radical as they like. Which is, not very.

All this is business as usual here. But now there a serious coup detat in motion. This is not a conspiracy theory, it is right out in public. If you haven't heard about it you are not in the GOP, because who listens to their media? Nobody with the sense God gave a goose. Nobody else listens to anything they don't already agree with anyway, thanks to the Internet marketing machine.

We all know the GOP is disabling what remains of the anemic democratic systems we had, suppressing access to voting and crippling the P.O. and the Census, any reliable electoral machinery. The long fight to abolish the Electoral College, on one hand, or make it the lapdog of the party in power, on the other, will soon be over, if the local GOP political machines in the critical states complete the plan to legislate "Pledged Electors," party loyalists, as reported by Barton Gellman in The Atlantic. After seeing armed militias swarming a state house, I'd believe anything.

As usual, all this unprecedented skullduggery is shrugged off as normal. But here's something completely unprecedented: the President's son is raising an "army" to "watch" the polling places on Election Day. Squads of "able bodied men, uh, and women" are being recruited on the so-called social media to go to the polls and "watch" for the Democrats' attempt to "steal the election."

Please note that I have not put words in anybody's mouth; the quotes are all from public statements.

We have to think this through, as crazy as it is. It's this crazy: win or lose, the President is promising to pull out all the stops -- what's left of them -- for "a continuation" of power. The threat coming from the White House is that the election isn't going to matter one way or the other, it's heads-I-win-tails-you-lose. Becuase either way, the President is promising mayhem in the streets.

The strategy of blaming the opposition for what they themselves are doing has worked. Everyone already thinks the election will be a fiasco, caused by whoever they are against. Issues are irrelevant. Law is irrelevant. All that matters is public perception of an unstoppable usurper, or of a divenly-inspired leader, it doesn't matter as long as the correlated reaction is apathy or blind loyalty. The other versions of the biological terror response can be addressed with thugs and state violence.

And now, on the verge of a debacle unfolding like a train wreck (in the President's inimitable style), the President is undeniably shown to be a criminal and a massive national security risk. The New York Times. Tax fraud. Debt up to his hairpiece to mysterious creditors. An imploding real estate empire. An incompetent criminal failure addicted to attention. For President!?

Do you think his bizarre career is coming to an end? Really? The next day a "debate" is staged as if this parasite was a letitimate contender for the highest office of public trust. Of course we thought it was the Office of the Presidency we were inviting into our living rooms. Instead we dignified and legitimized a deadly criminal.

Why is this still happening? What does it take? We knew he was a crook, a puppet of foreign oligarchs, and a pandemic profiteer to boot. We knew he was directly interfering in every effective public health response to the pandemic, throwing more people than died in "Nine-eleven" and the Vietnam War combined, twice over, under the bus of his pathetic ego.

Now we're about to watch as he steals the election, and as he clearly intends, his new Justice bestows the wreath on his impossible hair-do.

You have to wonder why nobody stops this. There must be some legal action that could result in a court order; or an emergency Congressional action, maybe removing this assumed immunity once and for all, so he could be indicted in a regular court; or even a Caine Mutiny removing the Commander-in-chief for incompetence. Something.

But for any of that to happen, it would have to be good for Business. And Business likes the status quo just fine, exactly the way it is. They are raking it in hand over fist. If any measly Congressperson squawks, unemployment in their district will explode, and they know it.

I'm an old Pogo fan. For some unknown reason I persist in outrage at Feudalism, as if human beings can do much better than this. Our old ways of life are obsolete and are killing us. Will the human race wake up in time? Stay tuned...
