Imagine a counter demonstration to a Boston Marathon vigil. Imagine a counter demonstration to a Oklahoma tornado or Hurricane Sandy vigil. Ridiculing and mocking someone else's loss is so heinous and emotionally abusive, legislation was passed last year to keep protests 300 feet away from military funerals. The law was inspired by the anti-LGBT Westboro Baptist Church which pickets US military funerals with signs like "Thank God for dead soldiers," and "Semper F*g."
On Friday, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners plan to hold a counter demonstration at the same time and place as a commemoration of the Aurora theatre shootings. The commemoration is organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
On July 20, 2012, a lone gunman, dressed for combat entered a movie theater showing The Dark Knight Rises and killed 12 and injuring 70 in minutes. The suspect, James Holmes, legally purchased a Glock 22 pistol at a Gander Mountain in Aurora, a Remington Model 870 shotgun at a Bass Pro Shops in Denver and a Smith & Wesson M&P15 semi-automatic rifle and second Glock 22 pistol. Yes, he was one of the "law abiding gun owners" that the NRA and politicians in its pockets defeat universal background checks and gun registries to protect. Thank you NRA.
"Rocky Mountain Gun Owners is attending this event to show Bloomberg [New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns] that his radical east coast anti-gun agenda is not supported by Coloradans," said Danielle Thompson, a spokeswoman for the National Association for Gun Rights, reported Politico. Thompson said she also helps the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners group with media.
It is hard to believe Rocky Mountain Gun Owners would want to rub salt in the wounds of the families of 82 victims, even as their names are read at the memorial service. But it also hard to believe that a month after the Sandy Hook massacre which robbed 20 first graders of their lives, gun lovers staged a Gun Appreciation Day. What?
Of course, the gun lovers' Westboro Baptist Church-style counter demonstration to the Colorado victims is sacrilegious. But it is also the best argument against universal armament. Judgment goes out the window when hot tempered, hair-trigger gun owners get mad. In shooting after shooting, citizens were "law abiding" until their boss, wife or society pisses them off. Like James Holmes.
