Guess Who Came to Dinner?

Donna Scott

Talk about fickle. All we have heard in the last two weeks is how Tarqe and Michaele Salahi crashed the November State dinner in honor of India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Countless Americans pored over the guest list to see who was and was not invited. One name caught my attention, former Secretary of State Colin Powell. When I saw his name I felt like screaming out as did Wilson during Obama's State of the Union, Mr. Powell, "you lie." Folks, it was Powell who went on national TV and assured the American public that the US was helping Haiti against Guy Philippe and his killing machine. It was Powell who then called kidnapped President Bertrand Aristide's claims he was kidnapped by the US, "absurd." It was Powell and his cohort Condoleezza (or as some refer to her, "kinda sleazy") who threatened Jamaica with economic sanctions for granting Aristide and his wife Matilda asylum.

Yet, there he was, all gussied up in his tuxedo, eating Indian delicacies and drinking fine wine. As he ate I wondered, did he think about the 35, 0000 women and girls who were sexually assaulted since he helped cover up the kidnapping of Haiti's democratically elected president? Did he think about the 8,000 murders and 4, 0000 political killings that he helped cover up while he and his homey (Bush) told bald faced lies about a democratically elected president claiming Philippe was coming to kill him when in fact Philippe was two hours away?

Hmmm? What does one need to do to be invited to one of these State Dinners?

For all who do not understand why corporate controlled media would not report this, here is a brief walk down memory lane. Haiti is the only Republic that had a successful slave revolt. For twelve years Toussaint Le Overture and his army beat down Napoleon's armies like they stole something until the Haitians emerged victorious. France had the most lucrative slave trade until these uppity black men said "Before I will be a slave, I will be buried in my grave." The US, Britain and France together used their power to tell the successful free slaves that they owed their captors 21 billion dollars (in 2004 figures.) When they couldn't pay, the US imposed a 16 million loan. Haiti never recovered financially. When Haiti won their freedom over 100 years ago, it began the crumbling of America's slave trade as well. The US has never forgotten.

To make matters worse, the US loaned all kinds of money to the murderous Papa Doc and Baby Doc Duvalier. In fact 40% of Haiti's external debt comes from these loans. We know under the Duvalier's over 50 thousand were butchered.

Between 1994-2004 the US spent over 70 million to build up opposition against the democratically elected President Aristide.

Aristide was no puppet. He would not play ball like Papa and Baby Doc. He opened schools, treated AIDS; he let the poor children swim in the presidential pool; he allowed a university to be founded to start educating Haitians; he raised the minimum wage, horror of horrors by a dollar and some change. And, he had the temerity to tell France to pay the Haitians back the 21 billion they extorted, with interest. Why does that affect the US? Well, if France has to pay back its slaves descendants, then the US might have to pay some reparations.

So, Colin "You Lie" Powell, used the corporately controlled media to say, "Aristide fled the country. "

By now, in 2010, there is documented proof of what happened to Bertrand Aristide. He was in fact kidnapped; Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, recorded an interview with his helicopter pilot who saw everything firsthand. Randall Robinson, Congresswoman Maxine Waters also threw in their support to help get Aristide some help. If it was left up to Colin, Aristide would have contracted the deadly strain of malaria ravaging the CAR he was flown to. Or, he would have fallen victim to all the violence in the African streets. But he did not die.
