The pen is mightier than the sword. This much used and respected quote adorns the walls of the Library of Congress and many of us claim to full heartedly believe in its truth. Yet when we see the egregious misuse of words we don't usually have the same reaction as if a sword were being dangerously waved in our faces. Perhaps we should.

I feel it is my obligation as a citizen to pick up my pen, in response to those in our country who, for their own misguided or selfish reasons, are wielding the most powerful words in a wantonly dangerous manner to our democracy.

We have listened for weeks as talking heads on Fox Infotainment channel have bandied about the use of the word "coup", mostly passive in our response to this rhetoric as the accepted, factless, over the top nonsense that is often pumped out by Fox. Some, including myself have offered a warning to the misuse of this word, but now seeing it spread like a virus among those holding positions of power and doctorate level degrees, it is time for serious and widespread protest.

Real democracy finds its greatest strength through free speech and freedom of the press. Censorship is not the answer to the misuse of this word but rather a scathing exposure of the choice of this word and the dubious motivations of those using it over and over and over. Many, to be sure, are simply repeating conservative talking points but a strong argument can be made that a greater design underlies the increased use of this rhetoric.

For the last time, the impeachment of Donald Trump is clearly not a coup. To use this language is not only factually inaccurate, irresponsible and dangerous but for elected officials and those who are highly educated, it is shameful. Perhaps we can forgive the average retired Fox viewer who sits on the couch marinating themselves in the unending propaganda that spews from the right wing squawk box day in and day out, as simply repeating the phrases they have been dutifully trained to parrot. But for those who hold positions of power and high level degrees, I call bullshit. You know better.

A coup is a FORCEFUL overthrow of an existing government outside of the established processes which normally allow for the peaceful transition of power. It is OUTSIDE of a democratic process. Perhaps if Hannity, Limbaugh, Matt Gaetz, Craig Roberts and others recklessly throwing this word around need a good refresher on what a REAL coup is, I would suggest Stephen Kinzer's book "Overthrow". In it Kinzer describes in detail the United States government's overthrow of many governments around the world through REAL coups. In fact the United States, through the CIA, has become so adept at conducting REAL coups that they have an established step by step procedure for carrying out these overthrows.

Although these over throws are best conducted in an entirely covert manner, without the consent or knowledge of the people and Congress, they also have a skilled plan to drum up support for these coups in advance through massive propaganda campaigns.

A conservative friend of mine sent me this article which I found very disturbing and which inspired my concern over the rhetoric, which has not abated but only grown as the right continues down this path:

https://www.ammoland.com/2019/09/war-is-coming-are-you-ready-will-you-fight/#axzz65GGYb7MQ

Notice they are claiming the end is already here. If you don't take these threats seriously just look at the right wing groups who take over in other countries after political instability. They conduct themselves as vigilante terrorists. We may think there is no level of indoctrination that can warp the mind of someone in our country enough to adopt this behavior, but that is why the right is spending so much time inducing fear into the hearts of these "patriots" so they will be convinced wholly of the dangerous enemy on the left and that they will have to die.

With all my heart I hope I am wrong.

#911NeverForget - it is "beyond any doubt" that explosives - not plane impacts and fires alone - destroyed the three World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

You probably already know but the SDNY agreed to convene a grand jury to hear testimony that explosives were used to vring own the buildings. If a grand jury finds the evidence sufficient they will indict the yet unknoen conspirators. It's a start to unraveling the lie...

"A coup is a FORCEFUL overthrow of an existing government outside of the established processes which normally allow for the peaceful transition of power."

How about "congressional coup" or "media coup"? What would you call the impeachment of Dilma Rouseff if not a "coup"?

When you say "congressional coup" what does that phrase mean to you? The Constitution designed the three branches of government to orovide checks and balances against one another. The process of impeachment is outlined in the constitution to put a check on a president who is reaching beyond his own powers or is violating his oath of office by committing crimes. The authority for impeachment rests solely with the House of Representatives with the Senate conducting the trial aspect where there will be an opportunity for the Senate to subpoena witnesses etc and ultimately act as a jury. And even before that there have been legal challenges put before the court for resolution as to the legality of the actions of the house. So there are absolutely checks and balances involved in this system making it by definition NOT a coup. There is absolutely no we shape or form that the word coup can be used accurately making it obvious that those using are misusing it for a reason.

Political entities on the right and the left will tell you things to manipulate you. You can't trust them and must actively think about what their motives are. Ask yourself about word choice abd timing. Haven't you questioned why Trump and the Republicans having the majority in the House and Senate for two years didn't start an investigation into Biden then? Why Trump didn't bring it up in his first call with Zelensky but only brought it up after Biden entered the race. Have you asked why Giuliani's two associates Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas have money to a Republican congressman in exchange for his agreeing to pressure those in government who could recall Ambassador Yvonivich? What was in it for them? They wanted her out because she was fighting corruption. Actions speak louder abd more truth than a person's words and you must ALWAYS as whats in it for the person pushing this narrative.

Thanks for the conversation.

Take care,

Michele

I understand what you're saying about the Right, but you might consider how some of the statements you make can be looked at from another angle. For example...

"One of their favored tactics in mobilizing support for an illegal action is to define and market an "enemy" as an "urgent threat to democracy" and "a threat to liberty" and so on."

How many times have you heard those words used by Liberals to describe Trump? It's true that some on the Right may use those words to describe their "enemies", but they are used over and over and over by the mainstream media to describe Trump.

"Those who continue to push lies and rhetoric, who continue to use words like coup and traitor to describe their fellow citizens, they will be to blame."

What is RussiaGate about if not to accuse Trump of being a traitor? And the narrative about the Ukraine events is more of the same: that Trump has interests above the well being of the United States: personal gain and helping "Putin".

"Noam Compsky in his book, "Manufacturing Consent" describes the way that the press, through misuse of words, rhetoric and outright lies generates public support, preemptively identifying the country in question as a "threat" or an "enemy" of the United States."

What has been the role of the "press" throughout the several years of the Trump Presidency if not to use lies (RussiaGate) to identify Trump as an threat and enemy?

Thank you for your comment. As for Russiagate, there are different opinions regarding the level of involvement of the Russians is the election etc. And I know there are serious questions about aspects of the investigation which I don't deny however, when it comes to Trump there is a vast body of evidence going back decades that supports his conflicts of interest regarding ties to Russian oligarchs. Aside from that HRC and Putin had a lot of bad blood so from an objective foreign policy standpoint it makes sense that Putin would have a preference and the history of most countries with empirical desires, the US foremost among them, shows that they WILL make attempts to influence the elections. It is not unique to the Trump presidency I just think Trump's extreme narcissism and psychological makeup lends itself to extreme levels of manipulation but "strong men". Dictators and mobsters are Trump's heroes. He uses the sane tactics etc. to try am be a "tough guy" but this actually backfires on him because it shows his thinking is very two dimensional and he is very easy to mislead. His behavior demonstrates a believe that winning, getting to the top, requires the ability of a competitor to be willing to do anything to get to the top including thinga which are illegal and corrupt and in fact "losers" play by the rules.

The media are complicit in pushing all manner of propaganda, both left and right. Their goal is to seduce the viewer/reader into a place where the consumer of their propaganda reaches a trust level. The goverment realizes that not everyone will be wooed by the same style of propaganda so they create the illusion of a liberal media. But in the end it is ALL controlled buy the government. The narratives that match on Fox and MSNBC show you what then government is advocating for because that is the only time they agree on anything, Venezuela for example.

I try to look at evidence not supplied by the media to form my conclusions and go back years to form a conclusion. Trump was only recently reinvented as a conservative firebrand. He was a Democrat, a friend of Hillary and had done MANY corrupt things prior to his entering office. He laundered money though his casinos. He over valued and devalued his properties for his needs at the moment which is why He hides EVERYTHING from the people.

I.agree that liberals also suffer this cult like delusional thinking when it comes to Obama and Hillary. Reagan is perhaps the most ridiculous icon of all. I rate him the highest because if the devastation he brought to Central America, in complete and utter disregard for the Constitution.

The Democrats painting Joe Biden as a sweet, honest old man are just as guilty as this who.refuse to see Trump's correction.

I hope if you thought I had any bias that has now been corrected. I won't let EITHER side piss on my leg and tell me its raining.

The time is growing shorter between the creation of these false prophets and the facts and evidence revealing their corruption. If people are willing to see the evidence when it is right in front of them, that time will get closer.

I wish you all the best in your pursuit of the truth.

Take care,

Michele
