Do you ever get the feeling we are truly at the End of Days, Truthseeker? The nightly newscasts almost make us believe in Dubya's ominous "evildoer" warnings. A gruesome new video shows the beheading of 21 Christian Egyptians by a Libyan branch of the terrorist group Islamic State, the victims were lined up by the seashore and executed en masse.
"About five minutes long, the video bears the logo of Al Hayat, the Islamic State's media arm. Unlike the cellphone videos usually made by Libyan militants, it is as polished as previous Islamic State videos, with slow motion, aerial footage and the quick cuts of a music video. The only sound in much of the background is the lapping of waves.
"The captives are made to kneel in the sand. Then they are simultaneously beheaded with the theatrical brutality that has become the trademark of Islamic State extremists. There was no indication in the video about when the beheadings took place.- Advertisement -
"The lead executioner speaks in fluent English with an American accent, and his words are translated in Arabic subtitles. Under the title 'A Message Signed With Blood to the Nation of the Cross,' he emphasizes that the fighters are just one part of the broader Islamic State group.
"'Oh, people, recently you have seen us on the hills of as-Sham and Dabiq's plain, chopping off the heads that have been carrying the cross for a long time,' he said, using Arabic terms for places in and around Syria. 'Today, we are on the south of Rome, on the land of Islam, Libya, sending another message.'
"He implies that they are taking revenge for the killing of Osama bin Laden by American commandos and his burial at sea, saying, 'The sea you've hidden Sheikh Osama bin Laden's body in, we swear to Allah we will mix it with your blood.'"
Egypt responded by launching airstrikes against IS targets in Libya, killing at least seven civilians. That's how it works. There is no question that IS is expanding, as expected. Even presumably "safe" nations cannot rest easy, as was demonstrated in Denmark over the weekend when a gunman opened fire at a free speech rally -- killing two and injuring five others. Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, 22, was likely inspired by the terror attacks by Islamic extremists in Paris last month that killed 17 people, as the AP reports:
"The 22-year-old opened fire at a cultural center and a synagogue -- targets that resembled the Paris attackers' rampage at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper and a Jewish grocery store -- before he was killed in a gun battle with a SWAT team early Sunday. His victims included a Danish documentary filmmaker and a Jewish security guard; five police officers were wounded."
Obama has asked Congress for an Authorized Use of Military Force (AUMF) to battle IS, but Congressional Republicans are unwilling to authorize Obama's plan, saying it doesn't go far enough, as MSNBC describes:
"Sen. John McCain said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the president's plan was 'convoluted' and, while the AUMF is worth debating in Congress, 'the president hasn't come forward with a plan or a strategy for us to have success. In his proposal, [Obama] left out [Syrian President] Bashar al-Assad, which is really amazing in that we are training young Syrians to go in and fight against Bashar al-Assad,' said McCain, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He added that the plan was 'an uncertain trumpet' but that Congress should not restrain the president from taking action. 'Congress has the power of the purse,' McCain said. 'If we don't like what the commander in chief is doing, we can cut off his funds for doing so.'"
Obama will never satisfy the Neocons -- either they'll sue him for over-reaching on Affordable Care or attack him for not going far enough on IS. There is no bowl of porridge that is "just right" for these flying monkeys.
Closer to home, there is also proof that the entropy of the universe is increasing, seven US states declare states of emergency due to extreme, deadly winter storms that are crippling the Northeast and the US economy. A CSX train carrying oil derails, then explodes in West Virginia, destroying a house and evacuating two cities -- and this is the second oil-train disaster in three days. Oh, and an aggressive form of the HIV virus has been identified, and scientists believe it is three times as virulent and deadly as the original strain.
Interesting times, indeed.
