UltraViolet is demanding justice for the Steubenville rapes, in which a minor female child was allegedly administered a date rape drug and transported, unconscious, to several parties where she was repeatedly raped and abused. The organization is calling for support via signing their petition.
According to their website, UltraViolet is an online "community of women and men, fighting to expand women's rights and combat sexism everywhere - from politics and government to media and pop culture," initiated less than a year ago.
Ultraviolet notes, "The girl was carried, unconscious, to different parties and raped at multiple locations throughout the night. And the dozens of teens who were there didn't try to stop them, get help or call the police--instead they took photos and posted jokes about the attack on Twitter.
This is Ultraviolet's message to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and the special prosecutors:
"A teenage girl was raped while bystanders took photos and posted comments online instead of getting help or reporting the crime. This is not just disgusting behavior--according to Ohio law, failure to report a felony is a crime. Prosecute anyone who knew about this crime and did nothing about it--including the man who was recorded on video joking about the rape."
According to UltraViolet's website, it has "hundreds of thousands of members all over the country, UltraViolet members make our voices heard to further the cause of full equality, empower women and fight attacks on women's rights."
UltraViolet was co-founded by Nita Chaudhary and Shaunna Thomas.
Chaudhary was most recently the National Campaigns and Organizing Director at MoveOn.org Political Action.
Thomas was most recently the Executive Director of the P Street Project, the lobbying arm of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee dedicated to organizing progressive members of Congress and their staff and connecting them to the progressive grassroots.
UltraViolet's motto is "Equality at a higher frequency."
