Let's take a bottom-up approach to dealing with Covid-19 and share information, observations, updates, ideas and resources on how to survive this crazy, never-before-seen situation. Five days ago, I said this was worse than a war invasion. Now everyone is comparing this to WWII. I've always been a science fiction fan-- reading and watching stories about apocalypse, about world changing events. We are living in the middle of one. One thing is clear. We're all in this together, and even if we have to stay home we can still help each other.

Now the word is, assume you are a carrier and don't be in contact with others.

80-% of Chinese were infected by people who did not know they were infected

40% of infected are under 50. Younger people ARE susceptible. Don't go to beaches or playgrounds or basketball courts.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has suspended the requirement to pay mortgages for three months. But what about renters?

Trump just came on TV again. He looks particularly orange today. Not talking about the virus, he's discussing the release of a prisoner. He is disgusting, using the crisis to promote himself, to pander to his hater base. He should hand the handling of the crisis over to a non-partisan, well respected grown-up who will become the voice leading the response to the crisis.

Trump is talking about helping afflicted industries. It makes me think of the big grand hotels in the US and Canada. They are owned by Saudis. Do we help them? Maybe, because the employees are Americans.

But Paul Craig Roberts told me that we should start nationalizing to enable debt forgiveness. He talks about doing it with the banks. But maybe, if the government helps companies, it should also get partial or complete ownership-- so the people own the companies, since we're paying to rescue them.

Shock Doctrine. Naomi Klein wrote a brilliant book that described how predatory leaders and capitalists use crises to take-- to take advantage for profit, to take away freedoms, to take control. There is no doubt that this is something we have to be vigilant about. Add in the comments how you see that happening.

Updates:

Sanders 'Conserving Resources' by Pulling Ads - Denies He Is Suspending Campaign (Good. There are months to go until the convention, which will probably not even be held live. A lot can change. Biden is really not showing up. His seven minute talks don't cut it in a time of crisis. Bernie should be doing daily long conversations

Secret Audio Reveals Top GOP Senator Knew Weeks Ago Just How Devastating COVID-19 Is but Didn't Warn the Public

Taking Public Transportation: I just spoke with a friend who took a flight recently. There were 6 people on the plane. I spoke to him while he was on a train and he was the only person in the car.

That whole 80% will be okay narrative is bullshit. They say that 80% of people won't be hit hard by the virus. But How many of those 80% will lose loved ones? My guess it will be at least half of them will lose someone they know. And how many of those 80% will infect people in the 20%? I just found out my 39 y/o daughter probably has it. She can't be tested, and her doctor has tried to set up testing, and, with her asthma, she's high risk.

Elizabeth Warren laid out 8 conditions for corporate bailouts which stop short of nationalizing them, but would change how they operate dramatically:

  • Companies must maintain payrolls and use federal funds to keep people working.
  • Businesses must provide $15 an hour minimum wage quickly but no later than a year from the end
  • Companies would be permanently banned from engaging in stock buybacks.
  • Companies would be barred from paying out dividends or executive bonuses while they receive federal funds and the ban would be in place for three years.
  • Businesses would have to provide at least one seat to workers on their board of directors, though it could be more depending on size of the rescue package.
  • Collective bargaining agreements must remain in place.
  • Corporate boards must get shareholder approval for all political spending.
  • CEOs must certify their companies are complying with the rules and face criminal penalties for violating them.

I agree with most of that.

Also, there are actual cures now:

Japanese flu drug 'clearly effective' in treating coronavirus, says China https://theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/18/japanese-flu-drug-clearly-effective-in-treating-coronavirus-says-china Hydroxycloroquin too: https://archyde.com/hydroxychloroquine-the-drug-that-could-stop-covid-19/ Why are we waiting for Big Pharma to give us a vaccine?

If the orange man in the White House is not totally captured by Big Pharma, he ought to leap on this and start treating people as they are already being treated in France and China and elsewhere.

We should not plod through double-blind studies either, but give these well-known drugs to the most critical patients unless they are contraindicated by well known reasons. There is no way the placebo effect makes any significant difference in whether people are cured of the corona virus or not. We need to begin treatment immediately.

How can "the rent" be cancelled without screwing landlords? Is this council composed of only people of thin resources who think those who are better off shouldn't be?

Yes, pretty much that's the membership. I follow their mailing list, but don't participate in their lopsided view of things. In NYC, development and maintenance was already taking a hit before this crisis due to some NIMBY legislators and anti-development policies which in the long run just reduce affordable housing.

I'm not saying Developers were getting the proportions right - there is a glut in high end housing - but putting a freeze on everything and making even rent collection impossible isn't the answer either.

But with the economy essentially frozen, the State has become the de facto owner/producer in the New Communism. See my article on that too.

Two days ago, on the 18th, Malaysia was placed under near-total lockdown, short of a curfew. Supermarkets, grocery shops, hospitals, pharmacies, electricity and water supply utilities, post offices and several other essential services are allowed to continue operations. All other commercial enterprises, offices and establishments are shut. Roads and malls are deserted. We haven't reached ghost town status yet. But that might not be too far off. The present lockdown order is up till the end of this month. The government has already issued a warning it may be extended if it doesn't produce a distinct change in the infection rate trajectory.

I started preparing for this a month ago. My most striking observation, and concern, at the time was how nonchalant the vast majority of people were. Practically no one wore a 3-ply mask. Not even staff and cashiers at supermarkets, shops and offices. Although hospital staff used masks, the checks at entry points were perfunctory. I was simply asked a few yes or no questions about travel to affected countries or having been in contact with others who had traveled. No thermal scans. Over successive visits to supermarkets and pharmacies, I put together a two-month supply of reserves. Each visit invited amused looks from many people, making me wonder if I was playing Noah or a Shakespearean fool.

All hell broke loose ahead of the 18 March lockdown deadline. Images familiar by now of panic buying, empty shelves, rush to get back to home towns, a huge throng of people and vehicles across the Malaysia-Singapore causeway, confusion over restrictions, contradictory orders from different authorities, crowds mobbing police stations for permits, students stranded at hostels... Things are settling down slowly. It is early days yet, so the infection clock continues to tick. Today I was told the hospital where we go for our regular medical checkups had its first corona case, so it is off bounds for us unless it is an emergency.

My, our, lives have changed dramatically. Borrowing from Hemingway, it happened gradually, then suddenly. Thing is the sudden part was 90% of the change. Abrupt and massive.

There is cause for cautious optimism though. China is coming out of the worst. Japan seems to have flattened the curve. Africa and the Indian subcontinent have been spared the worst, so far. On the negative side, Europe, led by Italy, is now the new epicenter. With dark implications for those living on either side of the Atlantic. Most new cases in Singapore yesterday were related to travel to Europe.

My advice is learn from the experiences of others who have been affected earlier to cushion the social and economic shock if/when it arrives. There is no shame in preparing, even overpreparing. It is wise to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. Most of my reserves of food have a year or more validity. It won't go to waste. Even if it does, I see it the same as the premiums we pay on our house, car and health insurance policies. We consider the money well spent when we don't have to call on the policies.

You are lucky to have not just awareness of disaster preparedness but the resources to enable you to buy and store your stockpile. I expect that in Malaysia, as in most if not all countries, there are many who lack those resources and will suffer the most from shutdowns.

It doesn't require denying that COVID-19 is a serious disease to see that the authorities have acted as though the disease is such a killer that there's no time to consider the serious collateral damage. This defies the data and avoids rational context. The most important means of infection control could be employed without putting so many in non-disease danger. This is a global panic driven by fear, not by clear, trustworthy information. Instead of a strong public health campaign, the emphasis has been on social and economic disruption as the "necessary" approach. Wearing a mask as a precaution against airborne transmission, as in Singapore, is pointless if you're not allowed to get anywhere close to other people.

I hope we'll learn from this how disease outbreaks can be managed less destructively. We'll be suffering the consequences long after the disease is controlled or has faded like SARS.

Difficult to predict what may happen.

Western countries, namely USA should ease sanctions at this difficult time. People of various countries do not deserve extra restrictions.

Governments should work together to come with a vaccine. This vaccine should be free and available to all people and nations.

Punishing innocent and helpless people must stop.

I'm not sure why you're down on the 80% of cases not needing any hospital care. TV news is an unreliable source for clear information, but there is straightforward medical reporting in a few places, such as Medical News Today. There are multiple factors that determine a person's resilience to respiratory infection, and most are well known. Age is a proxy factor, normally used as a shorthand for the complex of conditions commonly found in older people. But some young people have some of those conditions, which puts them at a higher risk than healthier members of their cohort.

The MSM always emphasizes the most worrying stats -- often the exceptions. A recent article in my local newspaper about Italy was headlined "Death Toll Surges 19% to 475 in a Day". In the article was the additional information that 4,025 had fully recovered, up 36% from 2,941 the day before, but that wasn't deemed a good headline.

Cuba, with 11 cases reported, 1 deceased (one Italian tourist), NO total quarantine yet, demonized and blockaded further by Trump, just received a British cruise ship (in Spanish) with 5 cases of Covid-19 confirmed and more suspects separated, transported all of the tourists and the crew to the airport where 4 planes of British Airways were waiting for them. All were flown back to the UK, 3 planes were taken to Heathrow, the 4th one with patients and suspects was flown to a military base (there in the UK). The ship was turned away by other Caribbean countries and by the USA.

Venezuela reports 42 cases. Maduro orders total quarantine. IMF denies an emergency loan to Vzla. (in Spanish).

Iran accuses the USA repeatedly of being behind the virus and of preventing the Islamic Republic from getting the supplies to fight it.

However, it is reported that a 103-years-old woman recovered. (in Spanish).

Hope you and yours are fairing OK in these strange times.

Toilets can be easily fitted with $30 bidets, which greatly reduces the amount of toilet paper needed. Bidets use only 1/8 gallon of water. It takes 30 gallons of water to manufacture a single roll of toilet paper. Look online. Get one now. It will greatly help the environment (more trees). Bidets are much more sanitary than using toilet paper.

For the past 300 years there has been a world-wide pandemic every 100 years or so. In 1918 was Spanish Flu and in 1820' was cholera. In the early 1720's was bubonic plague. Either there is divine providence of the earth trying to cull the human parasite or some group is behind these Malthus interventions.

Reply to Rob's question of what are the problems I'm having with the site on IPad. For one, I couldn't type in the text box that came up when I tapped the reply button under your and other's comments. I also can't separate text to make paragraphs unless there's a way other than tapping the return button. The paragraphs separate until I post and then everything is lumped together. I also had trouble editing a comment. When I tried and reposted, the mistake I corrected was still there. Everything works fine on Firefox and Chrome.

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE IN ITALY DYING OF THE CORONAVIRUS?

http://endoftheamericandream.com/archives/do-you-want-to-know-why-so-many-people-in-italy-are-dying-of-the-coronavirus

Unfortunately, many people in Europe have been immediately reaching for ibuprofen once they get the virus because they want something that will help them deal with the pain.

In fact, researchers discovered that most Italians that developed serious complications once they caught the coronavirus had been taking ibuprofen at home"

Yes, this is true. The good news is that it has a very short half life and can be completely out of your system not long after you stop taking it. Also, people need to check the ingredients of what they ar taking to see if the essential element in Ibuprofin is present.

A Chinese Dr. said it was from lack of discipline - Italians are partying amidst what is supposed to be a total quarantine.

CUBA sends doctors and its medicine - Interferon Alpha 2B - to Italy and other countries, including Surinam and Grenada (yes, that Grenada). All despite the US trying to stop it.

This is the most interesting thing I've come across - how electromagnetic frequencies weaken cells:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=637&v=zFN5LUaqxOA&feature=emb_logo

It's understood Wuhan is the first Chinese city with saturated 5G coverage, Vodafone in Italy turned on 5G in Milan, Venice, etc. South Korea is awash in frequencies and this:

"Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's CFO and daughter of its founder, was arrested in Canada on allegations she participated in a conspiracy to defraud banks in connection with Iran sanctions violations. Huawei was working to sell its 5G technology to the Iranians. In fact, Iran, in a joint operation between Irancell and Ericsson had started trialing the technology back in September of 2017."

I was at the VA Clinic this morning and they didn't seem concerned about this virus at all.

I was expecting them to ask me some questions, at least. But nothing. The male nurse who did the intake gave me the trump line of "thousands of people die of the regular flu every year, I don't understand why they're reacting to this like they are?"

I couldn't believe it.

The US might look to more advanced nations, like Ecuador, for possibilities - found this on my g/f page, she lives there:

What Equador is doing:

Last Saturday, the government announced that foreign nationals will no longer be allowed entry into Ecuador as of midnight Sunday, and citizens and foreign residents will be denied access after midnight today. The mayor of Cuenca also announced some restrictions. What follows are the new federal guidelines. I appreciate all that the federal and local governments are doing to keep us as safe as possible. Now we all need to do our part!

Ecuador is being very proactive:

GOVERNMENT OF ECUADOR ANNOUNCES NEW MEASURES TO FACE THE SANITARY EMERGENCY BY CORONAVIRUS COVID 19

President Lenín Moreno, on the national radio and television channel on the night of this Sunday, March 15, 2020, announced a series of complementary measures to confront the health emergency due to the spread of the Covid 19 coronavirus in the country. These actions are added to to those already advanced yesterday by Vice President Otto Sonnenlhozner.

The president announced restrictions on the movement of people and vehicles. Exclusively:

1. To purchase food, basic necessities and pharmaceutical products.

2. To attend health centers.

3. To get to the workplace and to return to your home.

4. To care for older adults, people with disabilities or serious illnesses.

5. For reasons of force majeure or emergency, proven.

This restriction will take effect from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Normal fueling will be allowed at service stations. The police and the Armed Forces will monitor compliance with these measures.

The government also ordered, from 6:00 am on Tuesday, March 17, the suspension of all commercial activities in establishments that concentrate large numbers of people, with only three exceptions:

1. Those who sell basic necessities, pharmacists, doctors, orthopedics, etc.

2. Those who offer laundry services.

3. Those who market pet food and telecommunications equipment.

The commercial premises will remain open the time strictly necessary to acquire food, medicine and products. Restaurants and cafes are closed, with the exception of home deliveries. Products will not be consumed within these premises.

The authorities will control all kinds of crowds. It is recommended that customers and employees keep a distance of at least one meter from each other. Food services in hotels, pensions and hostels will be used only for its guests.

Moreno announced that the test for the detection of coronavirus is free for people with symptoms or those who are within the epidemiological circle of a positive case. Older adults will have priority. The IESS will carry out the tests that are necessary, but private laboratories have been authorized to do the test to those who wish to do so. The State will control prices.

Classes remain suspended. Teachers and students will have to stay at home and the government is already developing the tele-education platforms. The central State will intensify the modality of telework.

While the emergency lasts, President Moreno ordered:

1. There will be no cuts in basic services in the residential sector due to non-payment.

2. Employers and workers must reach agreements on modalities and working hours. There will be no layoffs.

3. April, May and June tax payments will be deferred for 6 months.

4. Work with the financial system to alleviate payments

5. The tariffs on medical products necessary to attend the emergency will be eliminated.

Jon Rappoport: Italy Coronavirus: New explosive information:

"A very brief update. Read this carefully. Many people who were diagnosed as "coronavirus cases" in Italy, and then died, were almost certainly put on antiviral drugs. As you'll see, below, a significant percentage of these people had prior heart conditions or high blood pressure. But at least one of the antiviral drugs, called ribavirin, carries this VERY RELEVANT warning, from cardiosmart.org: "Ribavirin may decrease the number of red blood cells in your body. This is called anemia and it can be life-threatening in people who have heart disease or circulation problems." High blood pressure is a circulatory problem. Understand? Get it? LIFE-THREATENING. So how many coronavirus patients have been killed by the administering of ribavirin?"
