Our second Cancer New Moon, occurring at the last degree of Cancer, marks the emergence of something new regarding the Cancer aspect of human experience. The fact that it is also a total solar eclipse which unfortunately will not be seen in the Americas, but will be seen in Asia enhances this radical new beginning. Perhaps we'll really see the spread of freedom in the Middle East and Asia in the next years. We've certainly seen the power of the people in Iran, even if the old power structure seems to be winning.

Since the Moon is also at its closest approach to Earth, the gravitational pull on the tides of the oceans as well as our inner emotional tides will be stronger than usual. If you're already experiencing strong emotional tides, let them carry you to new shores. As you will see from the Sabian symbol for this new Moon, it's time to live a new way and create a new style of life.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun and Moon at 30* Cancer is:

A Daughter of the American Revolution. This is an image of someone who is the product of a great change. It is someone who now has the opportunity to live and grow in a new environment. Since it is a daughter rather than a son, it symbolizes the feminine aspect of life which takes in the new changes and incarnates them. Where have you finally realized that your old life is dead and that you have to step forward and create a whole new life for yourself? What do you need to believe to create that new life? What old habits and emotional wounds need to be left behind? See where 30 Cancer is in your chart, and you'll find a focus to base those changes on.

Solar eclipses eliminate old ideas and ways of doing things. They also repeat every 19 years. So you might like to remember what was going on in 1990 and see how you responded to the situation you encountered. How did you change then? If you went with something new, now you have another opportunity to take that ability or realization to the next level of achievement. If you didn't change, you will probably find yourself in a similar situation with your back to the wall. This isn't about blame, but rather life processes. Evolution is necessary for life!

The effects of a total solar eclipse usually last 3 years and are future oriented. What you can expect depends on how it affects your chart. If you have planets in the last 5 degrees of cardinal signs and the first 5 degrees of fixed signs, you will experience changes in those areas represented by the planets and houses. And if you were born, incorporated a business or had anything else 'born' from July 1727, October 1727, January 1424, and April 1424, you are going to experience fundamental change in your life.

The relationship between the Sun and the Moon symbolize the essence of Spirit as it operates here on Earth. The Sun as Spirit gives its light and life to the Moon as the creator of form. The Moon incarnates Spirit. At the new Moon, the Sun/Spirit impregnates the Moon/matter with a new consciousness. That's why astrologers always suggest that you 'plant' the seeds of your desire on new Moons.

But this new Moon will change the lunar cycle for the next 18 months, initiating a shift in our perceptions as we experience the full Moon in a sign before its new Moon. We get to see how we deal with the various aspects of our lives before we plant new seeds of change. The 'seeds you plant' at this Cancer new Moon come out of the realizations you made since the lunar eclipse two weeks ago, and these new seeds will manifest in next month's Leo/Aquarius full Moon eclipse. The different energies involved (watery new Moon with fire/air full Moon) make for greater tension, but also greater self-awareness. Our emotions (water) get to be examined (air) with greater consciousness (fire).

As you can see, the energy is stepped up yet again. It is more intense, so you can either stress out or throw off the yokes of tyranny in your life. If money is a source of stress, make do with less. Declare bankruptcy and get rid of old debts that belong to the old way of life you're leaving behind. If relationships are stuck in old wounded patterns, they'll fall apart. Decide if you love that person, and if you do, leave the past behind and begin over again on higher ground. The past is what we learned with, the future is what we do with that knowledge. If you don't have work, dig into your creativity and use the energy to create something for yourself. Or organize your house. This is a time to nurture your Self your soul. It's time to give yourself to the things that are most important to you.

Cancer, the 4th sign of the zodiac, belongs to the archetype of the Great Mother goddess. Cancer is the Moon's own sign, energizing the creation of forms and the nurturing of those forms. The Moon rules the birth-growth-death cycles of life as well as the emotional body within us. The gifts of Cancer are creativity, nurturance, protection, sensitivity, empathy, care-giving and emotional intelligence. The fears of Cancer are centered around emotional security, family, food and home.

We can see that our government's response to 9/11 did not keep us safe from the terrorists, because in going to war, we created tremendous homelessness in America. What we did in Iraq has come home to roost. There are tent cities in Los Angeles and elsewhere people are losing their homes, their emotional security and their families. In putting our resources into war instead of into our 'homeland', we have bankrupt our nation. Ask people why they feel insecure, and it isn't terrorists they blame. It's the economy that has failed us, because we now see how capitalism ran amok. What about our food supply? It's basically poisoned, as you can see in the movie Food, Inc.

We have obviously not learned the real lessons of democracy, because we have let ourselves be ruled by rich industrialists and their media flunkies. If this isn't a lesson in what makes for security, what is? I don't know what else we need to experience to understand that war and greed and the urge to power will never give us security. The only way to be secure is to find our inner peace and emotional security. That's something to meditate on this new Moon eclipse.

We can never create security by going to war. But we can create real security by opening to the feminine spirit that is rooted in Cancer. Just as Cancer sits at the bottom of the solar chart, representing Mother, home and family, it also represents our inner being, our soul. And it is there that we have to look for our emotional security not outwardly in money and social position. I hope that lesson came home to you after the lunar eclipse a few weeks ago.

On the first Cancer new Moon, which occurred the day after Summer Solstice, we entered the yin/feminine part of the solar year. What was built up since Winter Solstice must now be nurtured by our feminine side. This second new Moon solar eclipse when the Moon crosses between the Earth and Sun gives us a chance to reset the clock. If you haven't given yourself the nurturing you need, you get this second chance to start. When everything is taken away from you, you are still left with yourself. That's the place to begin again.

Women and Jungians have been talking about the return of the Goddess since the 70s. It's time to incarnate this new feminine Spirit within our lives. This new Moon occurs on the feast day of Mary Magdalene, the woman who some believe was the wife and spiritual partner of Jesus the Christ. Mary is called the 'Apostle to the Apostles' not only because she is the first one to witness Christ's resurrection, but because we now know that Jesus loved her more than the other apostles because she 'got' what he was teaching. She was a leader in the early Christian movement, and it seems that she was the incarnation of Wisdom for Jesus, just as the Queen of Sheba was for Solomon the Wise. Leave it to the patriarchy to describe her as a 'prostitute' rather than the conscious woman who was equal to Jesus the conscious man.

This new Moon is a good time to finally see and acknowledge the wonderful gift we have been given in our dual sexuality: two sides that compliment each other with our gifts and talents, two aspects of being human. It's time for women to reclaim their full feminine powers. (Why is it so bad for Judge Sotomayor to use empathy in making judgments when men have been swayed by their moralistic beliefs or their greed on the high bench for years?) And it's time for men to open themselves to their feeling, intuitive nature, which is their Soul.

I believe that Americans are called to a higher consciousness at this point in our history. We are called on to live up to our ideals and create the country our forefathers imagined. Inner consciousness needs to be acted upon for social justice.

Cathy believes that our writers and artists must take up our responsibility to create art that inspires, teaches and heals our humanity.

Cathy writes about political, psychological/spiritual, and cultural issues.
