Can No Longer Support Obama

A couple of months ago I wrote something in defense of Obama on Oped. It caused quite a stir, and most commenters weren't too impressed with my remarks on his behalf. Well, I have finally decided that I can no longer support him as I did earlier. I believe I gave him his just due, but now its time that I face up to what I consider serious omissions in his presidency. I wanted so much to have a president who was compassionate and caring re the animal condition. Sadly, I see no evidence at all in this regard.

Every day I click the links on Care2 which provide a donation to various concerns: wolves, the big cats, the primates, cats and dogs, the environment, global warming, needy children, etc. A moment to click and I would imagine even if each click merited only a penny for each concern - pennies do add up, especially if thousands of us are religiously doing it. While I was clicking I noticed a link below the concerns which read "100 horses killed in the helicopter round-up." My heart sank. All our petitions, e-mails, and the Wild Pony Express letters of Madeline Pickens had not softened hard hearts who are ordering these cruel round-ups. And who is responsible? Certainly we can start from the top -
President Obama, the Interior Minister Salazar, and the officials at the BLM.

After experiencing great sadness over the cruel deaths of the 100 stampeding horses, which of course, probably included young horses and perhaps even foals, I knew that I didn't want to see the accompanying video. But anyone who wants to view it -it can be easily accessed on the internet. President Obama et al are going against the spirit and the law of the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act which guaranteed them public lands in the West. So much for leaders who are above the law. No, President Obama, I cannot forget this. You are not the man of compassion I had hoped you would be. Obviously, you are more interested in the cattle barons using public lands for
commercial interests than the heritage of these beautiful free-roaming horses who belong to all of us.

I went to the internet and looked up this subject and found one posted by Laura Allen on Jul. 31, 2010 -entitled: Sen. Landrieu: "Obama administration should be ashamed." The article starts with a statement by the Louisiana Democratic Senator: "The actions of the BLM are contrary to the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971's original intent to manage the wild horses and burros in their natural state and to protect them from capture and harrassment.

I have repeatedly called for an end to these roundups until a more humane and cost-effective solution has been put in place. The Obama administration should be ashamed that this is happening under its watch."

Wild Horse Annie (Velma Bronston) would be proud of you, Senator Landrieu. She would view you
as another compassionate woman to realize the worth of these magnificent creatures. And, of course, she would be heart-broken to see her indefatigable efforts in their behalf coming to naught. Per Laura Allen -the BLM has continued to implement its plan to round-up approximately 12,000 wild horses in this year alone. They plan to have more wild horses and burros in holding facilities by the end of 2010 than will be left on the range.

I thought the Bush administration was callous and indifferent to animals in general and to our Wild Horses of the West, but at this point, I don't know which administration is worse in this regard.

For anyone interested - at this internet site Allen has included the 2010 gather schedule for downloading. Despite the concerns of people like Senator Landrieu, Madeline Pickens, and thousands and thousands of horse lovers, the cruel round-ups continue.

Re these beautiful horses, I have done nothing but relate this sad news. However, I do feel good that I no longer will be on record as a believer in the presidency of Barack Obama, and while I'm at it - I also look up to people who are truthful and grateful. Sadly, in calling himself the first African American president - this, in my opinion, is not accurate. He is the first Bi-Racial American president. And I hear more from him about his Muslim father who abandoned him than the Christian white mother and grandparents who raised him. Where's the gratitude?

I have been concerned about animal suffering ever since
I received my first puppy Peaches in 1975. She made me take a good look at the animal kingdom and I was shocked to see how badly we treat so many animals. At 77, I've been a vegan for the (more...)
