v>Howard Zinn Speaks; Collected Speeches 1963-2009
Amazon asks for titles to reviews. I'm titling this review based on how I felt when I got a first look at this book: Wow Wow Wow, What a Delicious , inspiring Treat at so many levels
Anthony Arnove, who wrote the script for the brilliant documentary, THE PEOPLE SPEAK, continues to do a briliiant job curating the work of Howard Zinn. This book makes 20 of Zinns incredible speeches available, covering free speech, academic freedom, the Legacy of Columbus, the death penalty, Anarchism, War resistance, the myth of American Exceptionalism, Just War, Civil disobedience, how history matters.
Zinn is a visionary, progressive genius who said years ago what still needs to be said, what people are re-discovering.
If you want to see the world as it really as, not as it has been painted to appear, but protectors of hierarchical, top-down history, this reader is essential reading that will get your neurons firing in totally new ways that will delight, excite, anger and energize you.
He wraps up his chapter on Columbus, which also discusses the big problems with western civilization, by saying, "WE know that it's poosible for change to take place suddenly, surprisingly, unpredictably. We've seen that in various parts of the world. It's possible here in the United States too."
This is a book that deserves to be read cover to cover. I'm not sure the sequence I'll read it in, but I dived in the day I received it and will be carrying it with me.
As a writer, publisher and radio host, this book is truly inspiring at so many levels.
Howard Zinn, alive, was a national, even a world treasure. Today, h this book keeps alive his way of seeing the world, a way more necessary now than ever.
If you are a liberal or progressive, this book will be a delicious treat, a collection of ways of seeing and framing that is so different from what you get from the MSM and mainstream politicians.
If you are an independent, give these ideas a spin. They will stretch your imagination and ways of seeing the world-- far beyond what you learned in school.
I was privileged to interview Zinn back in 2008.
