Today Bolivians took back their country from the global neoliberal system that had all but destroyed the fastest growing economy on the south American continent. An economy run by the Socialist, Evo Morales, an indigenous Bolivian. They did this by voting in such overwhelming numbers that the rigih-wing, US-backed incumbent conceded without a fight.
So far. History is rife with examples of what happens when the US is thwarted in its attempts to impose fascist dictatorships on small, struggling nations at gunpoint. The US regards these little fiefdoms as its assets, and expects high returns on investment. It doesn't like to see fledgeling democracies sending green shoots toward the sun, and sharing the wealth among the poorest of the poor.
How's that working out for US? Venezuela is still twitching. Chile is infested with the remnants of Pinochet's thugs, but the people are in the streets again. The talk, at least until a year ago when I was there, was full of nostalgia for the sadly moribund "pink wave" of Socialism across the region. Brazil was regarded as the dreaded future, and Bolsonaro has confirmed this by now, burning the Amazon rainforest, "the Earth's lungs," and slaughtering its indigenous stewards in genocidal numbers.
So much hangs in the balance everywhere, as the US itself writhes in agony, all hopes pinned on an election so battered and bad-mouthed by our own president that nobody can be sure their vote will make it through the count. The count? It may well be stopped partway through, and the decision handed to a Supreme Court hand-picked by the Heritage Foundation, the Koch brothers, and Face Book.
That, or one of several backup contingency plans, would complete the fascist takeover of the United States of America. That's putting an optimistic spin on four years of systematically undermining the foundations of democracy and the rule of law. We were taken over some time ago, maybe when that dick Cheney was in power.
This happened in Bolivia with the backing of the US. But now Bolivia is lighting the way, people of America. Indigenous people have defeated the American fascists. Surely we can do the same at home.
They are not out of the woods yet, but the collusion of the US, the IMF, the banks, the global neoliberal networks, and the extraction industries that control so much of the world's economy, has been exposed, as the great criminal enterprise it has always been. Again.
When Bolivia starts reclaiming its own natural resources from the corporations the previous government handed them on a silver platter, we will see just how committed or desperate corporate America is. If our election goes badly, as it will in any case for a lot of reasons besides the ascendancy of a true American dictatorship, Bolivia may well be the next project for the trainees that have cut their teeth (and broken a few) on Venezuela. In fact, this may happen regardless of a Biden win. Because it is What Wall Street Wants.
Wall Street. Shut it down. Shut it out. Shrink it, as those slimy fascist bastards put it, so it can be drowned in the bathtub. And then maybe, in the scant few years left to humanity, we can address global warming and save some of the natural world we have abused so badly.
