In March 2015, Bill Gates showed an image of the coronavirus during a TED Talk and told the audience that it was what the greatest catastrophe of our time would look like. The real threat to life, he said, is "not missiles, but microbes."

When the coronavirus pandemic swept over the earth like a tsunami five years later, he revived the war language, describing the pandemic as "a world war."

"The coronavirus pandemic pits all of humanity against the virus," he said.

In fact, the pandemic is not a war. The pandemic is a consequence of war. A war against life. The mechanical mind connected to the money machine of extraction has created the illusion of humans as separate from nature, and nature as dead, inert raw material to be exploited. But, in fact, we are part of the biome. And we are part of the virome. The biome and the virome are us. When we wage war on the biodiversity of our forests, our farms, and in our guts, we wage war on ourselves.

The health emergency of the coronavirus is inseparable from the health emergency of extinction, the health emergency of biodiversity loss, and the health emergency of the climate crisis. All of these emergencies are rooted in a mechanistic, militaristic, anthropocentric worldview that considers humans separate from-and superior to-other beings. Beings we can own, manipulate, and control. All of these emergencies are rooted in an economic model based on the illusion of limitless growth and limitless greed, which violate planetary boundaries, and destroy the integrity of ecosystems and individual species.

New diseases arise because a globalized, industrialized, inefficient agriculture invades habitats, destroys ecosystems, and manipulates animals, plants, and other organisms with no respect for their integrity or their health. We are linked worldwide through the spread of diseases like the coronavirus because we have invaded the homes of other species, manipulated plants and animals for commercial profits and greed, and cultivated monocultures.

As we clear-cut forests, as we turn farms into industrial monocultures that produce toxic, nutritionally empty commodities, as our diets become degraded through industrial processing with synthetic chemicals and genetic engineering, and as we perpetuate the illusion that earth and life are raw materials to be exploited for profits, we are indeed connecting. But instead of connecting on a continuum of health by protecting biodiversity, integrity, and self-organization of all living beings, including humans, we are connected through disease.

According to the International Labour Organization, "1.6 billion informal economy workers (representing the most vulnerable in the labour market), out of a worldwide total of two billion and a global workforce of 3.3 billion, have suffered massive damage to their capacity to earn a living. This is due to lockdown measures and/or because they work in the hardest-hit sectors." According to the World Food Programme, a quarter of a billion additional people will be pushed to hunger and 300,000 could die every day.

These, too, are pandemics that are killing people. Killing cannot be a prescription for saving lives.

Health is about life and living systems. There is no "life" in the paradigm of health that Bill Gates and his ilk are promoting and imposing on the entire world. Gates has created global alliances to impose top-down analysis and prescriptions for health problems. He gives money to define the problems, and then he uses his influence and money to impose the solutions. And in the process, he gets richer. His "funding" results in an erasure of democracy and biodiversity, of nature and culture. His "philanthropy" is not just philanthrocapitalism. It is philanthroimperialism.

The coronavirus pandemic and lockdown have revealed even more clearly how we are being reduced to objects to be controlled, with our bodies and minds as the new colonies to be invaded. Empires create colonies, colonies enclose the commons of the indigenous living communities and turn them into sources of raw material to be extracted for profits. This linear, extractive logic is unable to see the intimate relations that sustain life in the natural world. It is blind to diversity, cycles of renewal, values of giving and sharing, and the power and potential of self-organising and mutuality. It is blind to the waste it creates and to the violence it unleashes. The extended coronavirus lockdown has been a lab experiment for a future without humanity.

On March 26, 2020, at a peak of the coronavirus pandemic and in the midst of the lockdown, Microsoft was granted a patent by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Patent WO 060606 declares that "Human Body Activity associated with a task provided to a user may be used in a mining process of a cryptocurrency system"."

The "body activity" that Microsoft wants to mine includes radiation emitted from the human body, brain activities, body fluid flow, blood flow, organ activity, body movement such as eye movement, facial movement, and muscle movement, as well as any other activities that can be sensed and represented by images, waves, signals, texts, numbers, degrees, or any other information or data.

Stuff like this just marginalizes your own cause. It's a pity you can't see that. It's like waving a flag and saying, "Hey! See! We're smarter and more righteous than you!", when in fact you really haven't a clue.

And anyone who's anybody just doesn't give a sh*t, and never will...

Investigative journalist Michael Specter, in an article in The New Yorkeron 25 August 2014 called "Seeds of Doubt",[12] raised concerns over a number of Shiva's claims regarding GMOs and some of her campaigning methods. He wrote: "Shiva's absolutism about G.M.O.s can lead her in strange directions. In 1999, ten thousand people were killed and millions were left homeless when a cyclone hit India's eastern coastal state of Orissa. When the U.S. government dispatched grain and soy to help feed the desperate victims, Shiva held a news conference in New Delhi and said that the donation was proof that 'the United States has been using the Orissa victims as guinea pigs' for genetically-engineered products, although she made no mention that those same products are approved and consumed in the United States. She also wrote to the international relief agency Oxfam to say that she hoped it wasn't planning to send genetically modified foods to feed the starving survivors."[12]

Shiva responded that Specter was "ill informed"[50] and that "for the record, ever since I sued Monsanto in 1999 for its illegal Bt cotton trials in India, I have received death threats", adding that the "concerted PR assault on me for the last two years from Lynas, Specter and an equally vocal Twitter group is a sign that the global outrage against the control over our seed and food, by Monsanto through GMOs, is making the biotech industry panic."[50] David Remnick, the editor of the New Yorker, responded by publishing a letter supporting Specter's article.[51]

Cases of plagiarism have been pointed out against Shiva. Birendra Nayak noted that Shiva copied verbatim from a 1996 article in Voice Gopalpur in her 1998 book Stronger than Steel,[52] and that in 2016, she plagiarized several paragraphs of an article by S Faizi on the Plachimada/Coca-Cola issue published in The Statesman.[53]

Journalist Keith Kloor, in an article published in Discover on 23 October 2014 titled "The Rich Allure of a Peasant Champion", revealed that Shiva charges $40,000 per lecture, plus a business-class air ticket from New Delhi. Kloor wrote: "She is often heralded as a tireless 'defender of the poor,' someone who has courageously taken her stand among the peasant farmers of India. Let it be noted, however, that this champion of the downtrodden doesn't exactly live a peasant's lifestyle."[54]

Stewart Brand in Whole Earth Discipline described some of Shiva's statements as pseudo-scientific, calling her warnings about "heritable sterility" (Stolen Harvest, 2000) a "biological impossibility" but also plagiarism from Geri Guidetti, owner of the seed supplier company Ark Institute, and a "distraction" created by inflating the potential of terminator genes based on a single 1998 patent granted to a US company. Brand also criticized the position of anti-GMO activists, including Shiva, who forced Zambia's government to reject internationally donated corn in 2001-02 because it was "poisoned", as well as during the cyclone disaster in India. On the latter Shiva argued, "emergency cannot be used as market opportunity", to which Brand responded, "anyone who encourages other people to starve on principle should do some of the starving themselves". In 1998 Shiva was also protesting against Bt cotton program in India, calling it "seeds of suicide, seeds of slavery, seeds of despair", claiming she was protecting the farmers. Restrictive laws established in India under anti-GMO lobbying, however, led to widespread grassroots "seed piracy" where Indian farmers illegally planted seeds of Bt cotton and Bt brinjal, obtained either from experimental plantations or from Bangladesh (where they are planted legally) due to increased yield and reduced pesticide usage.[55] As of 2005 over 2.5 million hectares were planted with "unofficial" Bt cotton in India, of which Noel Kingsbury said:

Shiva's "Operation Cremate Monsanto" had spectacularly failed, its anti-GM stance borrowed from Western intellectuals had made no headway with Indian farmers, who showed they were not passive recipients of either technology or propaganda, but could take an active role in shaping their lives. What they did is also perhaps more genuinely subversive of multinational capitalism than anything GM's opponents have ever managed.

How does one exactly go from here:

Patent WO 060606 declares that "Human Body Activity associated with a task provided to a user may be used in a mining process of a cryptocurrency system".

To here?:

The "body activity" that Microsoft wants to mine includes radiation emitted from the human body, brain activities, body fluid flow, blood flow, organ activity, body movement such as eye movement, facial movement, and muscle movement, as well as any other activities that can be sensed and represented by images, waves, signals, texts, numbers, degrees, or any other information or data.

And:

In fact, Gates has been trying to dismantle the public education system of the United States for two decades. For him students are mines for data. That is why the indicators he promotes are attendance, college enrollment, and scores on a math and reading test, because these can be easily quantified and mined. In reimagining education, children will be monitored through surveillance systems to check if they are attentive while they are forced to take classes remotely, alone at home. The dystopia is one where children never return to schools, do not have a chance to play, do not have friends. It is a world without society, without relationships, without love and friendship.

Gates is hardly the first person to suggest including "attendance, college enrollment, and scores on a math and reading tests" as parts of evaluating success in school.

Again, she provides no documentation whatsoever for her own personal conclusions.

I'm not really sure why this caa caa is being top-headlined on OpEdNews.

btw: Although there is a scientific consensus that currently available food derived from GM crops poses no greater risk to human health than conventional food, GM food safety is a leading issue with critics. Gene flow, impact on non-target organisms and escape are the major environmental concerns. Countries have adopted regulatory measures to deal with these concerns. There are differences in the regulation for the release of GMOs between countries, with some of the most marked differences occurring between the US and Europe. Key issues concerning regulators include whether GM food should be labeled and the status of gene edited organisms.

Personally I haven't focused on the issue much so I don't really have much of an opinion. The knee-jerk, anti opinion seems to be that anything modified is bad. I remember reading once that Leo Tolstoy was against cobblestones along similar lines.

My problem was with yet another warped & mindless "Gates as Anti-Christ" nonsense on OEN. The Gates part of the piece I believe actually commenced after the GMO intro, which was, itself, completely unrelated to the title of the article.

I always resented Microsoft's "Our way or the highway" approach to computer technology, and spend about 90% of my time on a computer using Linux and open source software. But it's a leap to call it the work of the anti-Christ as this article implies. I don't think even open source guru Richard Stallman, who considers all licensed for money software evil, would go so far.

Also, Gates has very little to do with Microsoft these days.

There is so much else wrong with this article that characterizing it as "caa caa" is about the only rational response for me. Thanks for taking the time to debunk it more specifically.

Not surprising to see this gifted scientist smeared after outing the sociopath Bill Gates' dystopian agenda. Just because the guy is a billionaire does not qualify him to make decisions about global human health. The assumption that it does it the disease we need to be most concerned about.

What I consider the true tragedy here is that people's minds have apparently been so corrupted and degraded (probably by over-exposure to TV and the Internet) that they are no longer capable (if they ever were before) of processing basic facts, even after they are clearly laid out right in front of them, and continue to cling to their pet fantasies and projections.

The guy currently in the White House isn't there for no reason.

Gifted scientist? Hardly. Shiva's not a scientist at all, just an outspoken activist with some pretty wild, unscientific ideas. But she certainly appeals to those willing to suspend rational skepticism and simply climb on to her anti-progress bandwagon. There's a difference between skepticism and suspicion, and Shiva promotes the latter, dismissing agronomic advances and good science in the process.

I'm surprised that she's being regarded as a hero by anyone here. Is it simply that she's a rebel? Unsound reasoning can lead to unsound rebellion.

In fact she is a degreed scientist. Do some research.

She has seen the damage of the push to saturate India with GMO crops. They have experienced massive crop failure and farmers being buried in so much debt they commit suicide in ever increasing numbers out of despair.

What's sad is to see people like you guys who trust capitalism more than nature. It's that belief system that is killing us.

Did the research and she actually has no degree in any specific field of applied science. She has degrees in the philosophy of science, which makes her as qualified to make judgements on biochemistry as having a doctorate in music theory qualifies one to play the trombone.

I'm not the one posing as an expert and authority. What part of her activism is based on quantum theory?

sci·en·tist (sī"ən-tĭst)

n.

A person who is engaged in and has expert knowledge of a science, especially a biological or physical science.

Technically I'd agree with, David. A scientist is someone who is employed as a scientist, and practices in a non-abstract field of it. Not someone who has a degree in the philosophy of it.

But I respect your right to differ.

I think you need to do more research. According to her Wikipedia entry, the closest she comes to being a physicist is her bachelor degree in that field. I have a similar degree with dual math and physics majors. That doesn't make me a scientist (although that was my original goal), and it certainly doesn't qualify me as an expert on nutrition or crop development.

Shiva is an activist and a figure in the anti-globalization movement, not a scientist. She certainly has her fans, as you make clear, but her activism, especially against crop science, is in opposition to progress. Globalization has some drawbacks, but Shiva barks up the wrong tree, with mischaracterizations and advocating policies that are harmful to the poorest. I'm baffled that such a stance can appeal to progressives.

You are correct as usual Lois.

What does a sheepskin mean anyway? One can be a scientist, just like one can be a journalist or excel in many other fields without being anointed as an "expert" by an establishment system of academia. Actually an establishment affiliation can be a great hindrance to knowledge. Look at the corrupt Fauci!

It is only shallow and narrow minds that judge a person by their academic "pedigree". Look to their work, accomplishments, listen to their words and see their connectedness (or lack of) to humanity.

Usually someone who throws around degrees and "settled science" doesn't have anything important to contribute.

I tend to agree with your last sentence. The rest has me rolling my eyes, wondering how you've acquired such wide-ranging suspicion and disdain.

I am surprised. I would have thought the last sentence would be an eye-roller for many. What is it about the rest of what I said that makes your eyes roll?

In anticipation of your response, if any, my opinion is that academia has been thoroughly corrupted. Maybe it has always been that way. It has become worse. Academic freedom, which is the real basis of education has been crushed. Universities are a hotbed of establishment indoctrination, which is the opposite of intellectual enquiry.

As an example, while Bill Gates is a despicable person on many levels, he is a person who has gained tremendous knowledge and achievements. Granted he has done so on the backs of others, and stepping on many backs and dead bodies. Still I would not use his lack of a sheepskin to criticize him. There are far too many real issues.

Many good people have taken the good from a formal education and I would not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Exceptional people rise to the top despite their formal education. Most just achieve corrupt mediocrity.

I probably shouldn't enter comments on my phone, given the severe limitations of the interface. Actually I agree with most of what you wrote, but the tone seemed too dismissive. Also, I don't understand the condemnation of Fauci. I don't see that he's made any more shifts than any other authority.

I certainly agree that academia has been corrupted and academic freedom largely crushed, to the detriment of us all. Instead of being places where thoughtful iconoclastic ideas can at least be discussed, most universities seem to have become places where dogma is instilled.

Fauci is in bed with Big Pharma. He is basically a vaccine salesman and drug pusher. He wouldn't have lasted at NIH since 1984 if he wasn't.

He has lied about the Covid19 pandemic, first saying it was not any worse than the seasonal flu, then saying it was 10 times worse--- which all the numbers say it is not, including his own.

First he tells people not to wear masks, and then says he was lying--- yes he actually admitted or used as an excuse that he was not being honest. He then tells people to make cloth masks and to wash them with the regular laundry, which is insane since washer/dryers are petri dishes for e. coli, staph, strep, Klebsiella oxytoca, and many other bacteria.

He was dismissive of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin even though they are well established drugs whose side effects and adverse reactions are known--- i.e. safety and risks. Instead he is quick to push unknown and likely dangerous vaccines. For about 99% of the people, Covid19 can be managed by treating the symptoms and preventing secondary infections, just like is done with seasonal flu and other viral respiratory infections.

Fauci has been the cheerleader and fearmonger for shutting down the entire economy. That is tunnel vision in the extreme. Many more deaths and suffering will result from people losing their source of livelihood and economic well-being. Even hospitals have been closed, supposedly to make room for the flood of Covid19 cases which never showed up. Many hospitals are running at about 25% capacity. Other much more serious life-threatening diseases are being ignored.

He is the textbook example of a corrupt bureaucrat in a white coat. I could go on, but I think you get the picture I am painting.

I would have thought his being a salesman rather than a scientist (in your esteemed estimation) would have actually validated his authority and worth.
