Beto O'Rourke: Donald Trump's Rhetoric 'Has Contributed' To Tensions In Country ~ Beto O'Rourke says that Trump calling Mexicans rapists and criminals and calling Neo-Nazis fine people have contributed to the problems we face.

In a comment at a Fort Worth restaurant, Texas Governor Greg Abbott rallied the troops with the usual predictable colossally damaged GOP rhetoric. From yesterday's article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram by Anna Tinsley:

He urged the crowd at Cooper's to support local Republicans on the ballot, particularly legislative and judicial candidates.

"This election is about far more than the next two years, four years, six years," Abbott said. "It's quite literally about the future of the United States itself. If ever we lose Texas to the Democrats, we will lose the United States of America forever. We as patriots have a duty to our country to not let that happen. We have to keep Texas red."

Moving on to a more intellectually challenging analytical discussion: In his column today in the Longview News Journal and in several other papers, Austin based columnist David McNeely incisively refines this question: What's driving huge Texas voter turnout?

An unprecedented huge number of Texans are voting early in this year's mid-term elections. By Election Day on Tuesday, it may come close to the larger turnouts registered in presidential elections.

McNeely states the obvious right off the bat: "Democrat Beto O'Rourke challenge to Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz ... In Texas, it might be easy to credit the expanded turnout to U.S. Rep. O'Rourke's ambitious, campaign to unseat Cruz. O'Rourke has energized a Democratic base dormant for at least two decades. If there is a catalyst for a refurbished grassroots Democratic Party in Texas, his campaign is it. The El Paso congressman's campaign reported Sunday its voter turnout workers had knocked on more than 1 million doors.

Other key factors, consistent with what I have pointed out all in numerous OEN articles for 10 months:

"Referendum on Donald Trump ... However, huge off-year turnouts are occurring all over the country. Readers of election tea leaves think there's a national interest in the election, as a referendum on Republican President Donald Trump."

Young voters ... How many of those voters across the country, and in Texas, are young people, who are registering and voting in large numbers, and are presumed more likely to vote Democratic? Will they, and will it be enough to make a difference?

Mexican-Americans and the Hispanic "Sleeping Giant"

How much will the Hispanic vote turn out? They also tend to lean Democratic -- when they vote. But for the past several election cycles, Democrats' hopes that they would turn out haven't been fulfilled. Whether Hispanic voters have been energized enough against Trump's "Build the Wall" effort to close off the country's southern border to countries like Mexico, from which many of them or their forebears came, will significantly boost their vote remains a big question. Can Beto -- who grew up in El Paso, speaks fluent Spanish (which Cruz does not), and talks lovingly of the bicultural border life -- attract enough normally nonvoting Hispanics to the polls to make a significant difference?"

[It is clear to me that that is precisely what is occurring, but there are also major fear factors in for example a grandparent posting a Beto sign in their front yard in the Rio Grande Valley or in Houston, for fear that the undocumented grandchildren might be deported as a consequence. Certainly, Trump's threats to the Birthright provisions consistent with the 14th Amendment will probably galvanize many Hispanics to vote, as they realize that their vote is the first and most important line of defense in these GOP manipulations through fear.]
