Today is Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Americans have a lot to atone for- a million and a half dead Iraqis, hundreds or thousands of dead Afghanis, hundreds of prisoners languishing at Guantanamo, an unknown number of people tortured by our government and its allies,- the list of atrocities committed by our government, in our name, with our tax dollars, goes on and on.
Now we are starting to feel the karmic pain. So far, the invasion and occupation of Iraq has cost about $800 billion http://usliberals.about.com/od/homelandsecurit1/a/IraqNumbers.htm of our money. The US is headed into a deep recession, and this is one of the main reasons, added to tax cuts for the rich and unregulated, predatory trading.
Foreign governments, which own a large share of American assets, are no longer willing to support our profligate ways and our evil plans- now aimed at Iran. They have lost confidence in the honesty and integrity of American government, banks and businesses, and rightly so. Under Bush and Cheney, we have developed an amoral culture, devoted to money, with an attitude of "anything goes". Who would invest in such a situation?
The only way to restore some prosperity to America is to rediscover our moral values, and to rededicate ourselves to truth, justice and a sustainable future for our children.
It's Yom Kippur. Let us call on our higher power, as they say in AA, to forgive us, help us make amends, and do better.
Peace, Carol Wolman, MD
