For decades, the Koch brothers have led a secret coup for the billionaire class.

The Koch brothers are oil magnates and billionaire GOP funders.

They believe that their great wealth entitles them to rule over the many. For decades, they've been running a surreptitious assault on the rules that protect the majority of us from their abuse. From whacking our voting rights to busting unions, their intent is nothing less than to pull a coup on democracy, installing a government of, by, and for the superrich.

They've enlisted a secretive cadre of other billionaires who share their extreme kleptocratic belief that...

1) the property rights of the rich are more important than the people's political rights,

2) that majority rule is not a good form of governing, and

3) that the "Makers" (as the billionaires dub themselves) should be able to overrule collective actions of the lower classes (whom they call "Takers").

They've created a complex, sophisticated web of right-wing front groups that have already corporatized a slew of our most basic laws and institutions, and they've gained a chokehold on nearly every level of government (including our courts and whole states like Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Texas). They've essentially taken over the Republican Party.

Even more shocking than the arrogance of this unprecedented power grab by the conspiracy of billionaires is its quiet success.

The Koch Coup crept up on us because it abhorred publicity and couched each move as an independent effort by a separate group. Then the conspirators backed the Supreme Court's outrageous 2010 Citizens United decision, decreeing that unlimited corporate spending is allowed because it's "free speech." Only then did Americans begin waking up to the reality that the Kochs were making an assault on democracy itself.

It's about time someone begins calling the Koch boys the conspirators they have been. There is no terrorist group, save the CIA, that could do the damage to our nation's democracy than the Kochs through their destruction weapon, ALEC (American Legislative Council). Presently, the Kochs own over 2000 State and Federal legislators, shall we call them co-conspirators, who take boilerplate pieces of legislation to be voted into law. In order to assure these democracy defeating pieces get passed they pay and/or entertain them well, as they did with Supreme Court Justices Thomas and Scalia prior to the Citizens' United action, which of course gave the Kochs' billions the ammunition needed to "steal" elections (and we're concerned about the Russians) of not only Presidential, but every political election held in our nation. They have even paid to steal school board elections.

As far as the American dream and our democracy go the Koch brothers are the head of the axis of evil.

We're so far into this perversion of our democratic institutions that it seems unlikely that they will recover incrementally, now that the seriousness of the problem has been recognized.

Most likely, it will take a crisis to create the opportunity for more radical change. Not that I am looking forward to the crisis...

In addition to the wealthy keeping us in bondage, however, there is yet another factor that is equally virulent. We have all been recruited in the service of the American empire, which has become the core preoccupation of our government, and one that we did not choose.

These are the two primary factors that keep the US mired near the bottom of the Western countries in terms of quality of life of the citizenry, and make our government into a pageantry of falsehoods that keeps the citizenry wrapped up in pleasant illusions.

In other words, they believe exactly the same things as our Founding Fathers, the framers of our laughably sacralized Constitution.
