The fact Trump's lying swamps, pun intended, the number of lies told by any other modern president is well documented and discussed - sort of. The main-stream media, commonly referred to as MSM, still hesitates to openly call him a liar. Their preference is to use every more-subtle euphemism available under the guise of respect for the office. The general public has been trained to understand short simple messages, not euphemisms. Like him or hate him, Trump knows how to communicate to his target audience. How many euphemisms does he use?
I know, I know, everyone loves to find fault with the MSM. But, let's face the cold reality. It is the media's pretense at politeness and fairness in lieu of reporting hard facts that has left the general populace questioning their trustworthiness. It is their delusional claim of representing both sides that gives a stronger voice to those who should never be heard in the first place. There's a reason journalist haven't traditionally gone into a mental facility and handed a microphone with national reach to those wishing to incite, divide and inflict harm on others.
Now, the more divisive the better. Who wants to watch a level-headed debate of opposing opinions drawn upon different interpretations from the same facts? Yawn! We'd sooner watch CSPAN. But, let's be fair. Trump did not create a general distrust of the MSM. Their failure to report honestly on the impacts of neoliberalism among other issues well preceded Trump. He is only one of a long line of presidents, politicians and so-called public servants who have spun some whoppers. He just happens to be a far more talented grifter, able to identify and exploit weaknesses to his benefit.
It is the MSM's consistent failure in lacking the backbone to go against their corporate backers that facilitates Trump's so effectively labeling them as "Fake News". Never, or rarely, reporting non-flattering stories on major corporations, because a drug, military-weapons manufacturer or fossil-fuel company might pull their sponsorship. This translates into the MSM only reporting some of the truth. It's the old adage, "I didn't lie ... I just didn't tell ALL of the truth." See the damage? It's the "best friend" who assures you your boss isn't sleeping with your partner and leaves off the bit about knowing your unfaithful partner is sleeping with your neighbor. Your friend didn't lie. He or she simply didn't tell you the whole truth. Now, how much trust are you going to instill in your best friend in the future? If someone says your best friend is lying to you on another matter, even if the friend isn't, the seed of doubt is already planted. Trump is a master at nurturing that seed.
It is the MSM's refusal to apply harsh but factual labels that continues to strengthen Trump's hand. The perfect example--Trump wants to classify ANTIFA as a terrorist organization. Instead of "he can't do that", how would the following play out?
Reporter: "Mr. President, you want to classify ANTIFA as a terrorist organization. Please help educate us. What does ANTIFA stand for?"
President : "They are a horrible bunch of thugs and terrorist attacking good innocent people. They're a bunch of losers. All of them."
Reporter: "But, Mr. President what does ANTIFA stand for? What do the letters mean?"
President: "As I said, they are a bunch of horrible agitators, horrible criminals and thugs who want to hurt good people. I'm declaring them a terrorist organization to protect our good people."
Reporter: "But, Mr. President. ANTIFA stands for anti fascism, they're against people like Mussolini and Hitler. They were fascist. Are you pro fascism? Is the United States now a pro-fascist country?"
President: "That's a stupid question. I'm not even going to answer that! You are a disgrace, a loser, a terrible reporter!"
There are towns across our country where our citizens are genuinely afraid of ANTIFA. They don't even know what the contraction ANTI-FA stands for. If they knew it was against people like Hitler, how would they feel? Many truly believe it is a terrorist organization. There are patrols set up to guard against it. I don't condone the violence sometimes committed by a small percentage of the people who are anti-fascist. But more sickening is our refusal to clearly label, clearly state what is right in front of us. Trump, as many of our corporate leaders are, is a fascist.
Softball questions, euphemisms, polite speak, reporting only part of the truth and a downright failure to report the hard facts, no matter how offensive or unflattering, is what gave us Trump in the first place. If only the MSM talking heads paid more due to reporting facts and less to being celebrities, who knows what good might be done? One of them might actually earn the worship they so desperately crave.
