The President departed Denver, Colorado and returned to the White House.

 

Day1010/Oct27th/Thursday: The President met with United States Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner in the Oval Office of the White House. Source

The President telephoned Cheryl Reeve, head coach of the Minnesota Lynx, to congratulate her and her team on winning the 2011 women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Finals. Source

The President had dinner at the Liberty Tavern in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia with winners of "Dinner with Barack" , a campaign contest. The winners were: Juanita Martinez, a retired teacher from Brighton, Colorado; Casey Helbling, an entrepreneur and small-business owner from Minneapolis; Ken Knight, a U.S. postal worker from Chandler, Arizona; and Wendi Smith, a retired professor and artist from Corydon, Indiana. The President, in a released statement, congratulated King Abdullah and the Saudi people on the selection of Prince Nayif bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud as Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The President, in a released statement, declared, "The U.S. District Court's approval of the settlement between the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and plaintiffs in the Pigford II class action lawsuit is another important step forward in addressing an unfortunate chapter in USDA's civil rights history. This agreement will provide overdue relief and justice to African American farmers, and bring us closer to the ideals of freedom and equality that this country was founded on. I especially want to recognize the efforts of Secretary Vilsack and Attorney General Holder, without whom this settlement would not have been reached."

The President issued a Presidential Memorandum, outlining measures to Accelerate Technology Transfer and Commercialization of Federal Research in Support of High Growth Businesses.

The President issued a Presidential Memorandum, in which he outlined and directed the heads of executive departments and agencies to implement measures to make it easier for America's small businesses and America's exporters to access government services to help them grow and hire.

The President declared a major disaster existed in the State of Louisiana and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by Tropical Storm Lee during the period of September 1-5, 2011. Federal funding was made available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Tropical Storm Lee in the parishes of East Feliciana, Jefferson, Lafourche, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, Terrebonne, and West Feliciana. Federal funding was also made available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. Source
