She and other prominent mental health professionals wrote the book following a conference at Yale at which they concluded that they had a "duty to warn and protect." She has stated: "Every military officer goes through a physical and mental fitness for duty test, but the commander in chief doesn't. We are saying this is a glaring omission. If America's generals must pass a psychiatric evaluation before they're allowed to lead our troops into battle, shouldn't our presidents have to pass the same test before they're allowed to lead our generals?"Authoritarianism is already sweeping the globe. It will become more appealing as our ecology and social structures collapse in the coming decades. Like it or not, we have a profound need to become more informed and sophisticated about power and how to prevent its abuse, as well as how to inform parents, teachers, and the rest of the public in regards to recognizing and preventing malignant narcissism, and yes, about the psychological dimensions of evil.
We cannot afford to overlook the psychology of our political leaders and we certainly cannot afford political leaders and government operatives who are malignant narcissists. Maturity demands that we do not remain passive or look away from this critical issue. Our survival as a species may well depend on it.
