A survey of households found 16.3 million Americans to be unemployed and the Labor Department reported that over 30 million are receiving some sort of unemployment benefit.
Some of the jobs are not coming back. As it stands, "the nation only has 5.4 million job openings - not nearly enough for the more than 30 million currently receiving unemployment benefits," (Heather Long, The U.S. economy is on the verge of a 'lost year,' Washington Post, August 7, 2020).As David Leonhardt notes, "the toll of the virus in the United States has fallen disproportionately on poorer people and groups that have long suffered discrimination. Black and Latino residents of the United States have contracted the virus at roughly three times as high a rate as white residents" (David Leonhardt, "The Unique U.S. Failure to Control the Virus," New York Times, August 6, 2020). They also have suffered disproportionate economic distress.
President Trump cannot be blamed for the existence of the coronavirus, but he is solely responsible for the abdication of leadership that allowed the coronavirus to sicken more than 5 million Americans and snuff out more than 160,000 lives. Thus, he is largely responsible for causing unimaginable bereavement within families in every corner of our country. Finally, his failure to lead in combating the coronavirus necessitated the shutdown that has caused a "Pandemic Depression" that inflicts economic carnage on our country.
Trump's gross negligence constitutes treason. Yet, this loudmouth and sociopathic fraud still walks free.
The proper response to this toxic, ignorant, serial lying, corrupt, racist, sexist, homophobic, incompetent, whining, blustering con man buffoon, stoker of police violence, grafter, low life and sociopath is to vote him out of office overwhelmingly before he completes the destruction of our country from within.
When he loses, Trump undoubtedly will pardon his children, Stephen Miller, and Attorney General Bill Barr before he leaves office. He also will attempt to pardon himself, but eventually will be rebuffed by the Supreme Court. But, regardless of the Court's ruling, presidential pardons do not cover state crimes - and the state of New York has its sights set on him and his children.
After due process and assuming justice prevails, we might be able to chant, "Lock him up!"
