Kipp's grandfather was Chief Heavy Runner, who was massacred on Jan. 3, 1873 in a huge slaughter of Blackfeet Natives that was led by Col. Eugene Baker. At least 178 Blackfeet were massacred by the U.S. Army and Montana militia groups by 50-caliber machine-guns. Killed in this holocaust were women, children and babies.
"Some of the stories I heard were atrocious," Kipp told me. Ironically but perhaps to the Creator's wishes, Frank Kipp's birthday is on the same day of this massacre, Jan. 23.
Gabriel Black Elk, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe who lives in Denver, is the president of the UUWS Denver Chapter. He told this writer in a telephone interview on April 27: "I was a rally last night that was sponsored by the family of Dion Avila. who was murdered by the Denver Police Dept. a week and a half ago."
"It's the cops doing it. For some reason, they've been killing Natives, as well as others, even white kids.
"We are being stalked, me, my sister and my mom. We're to the point now that
we're getting really fed up with it. We don't know what to do, there's no one to
call. I mean, can you call the police? Come on!
"I recorded a video of last night's event. I recorded a video last night and the cops put it on one of their social media pages," he said.
Black Elk told me a woman he lives with was arrested by police during Tuesday night's protest for the charge of 'obstruction of a roadway' and she was in the grass, not even near the road.
"It's ridiculous. The cops follow us. My
brother was killed in July -- Paul Castaway -- he was running into a trailer park. He was on (psychotropic medication) and hadn't been taking these meds and he sort of freaked out. The cops shot him.
"All I know my brother ran into a trailer park, the cops chased him, and he told the cops he was going to kill himself so the cops shot him three times," Black Elk said.
"We're planning a march for the death of my brother in July, the one year anniversary of his death."
"The police in Denver are terrible and they're very violent. AIM
wasn't there when my brother was killed so I turned to James Swan.
"I said to James, 'Let me lead the
Denver Chapter of the UUWS and we'll do this together,'" Black Elk said.
The UWWS Denver chapter has been
in effect since last October. When asked if the chapter is getting anywhere, Black Elk told this writer, "Man, it's grown and progressed
into something beautiful. Right now, we have six members, but the membership comes and goes.
And as far as supporters are concerned, the Denver UWWS Chapter has hundreds.
"We have Occupy Denver supporting us,
along with BlackLivesMatter5280, the Denver Community Defense Committee, the International
Socialist Organization, Native Lives Matter and UUWSDenver###.
"That's just in Denver. We can go national," Black Elk said.
As far as Swan is concerned, Black Elk said, "James is on a good path. For me and most of my family, although we've always been an AIM family, I honestly feel that it's time tor a new beginning. Personally, I think AIM is done. They're not doing anything really and they're just not there anymore for Natives."
