Democratic Representative, John Murtha, an old-school marine himself, was a strong voice of dissent. He took his concerns to Senate Appropriations Committee Chair, Daniel Inouye, the Democrat from Hawaii.
"I just don't like the idea of the military being in the propaganda business," Murtha was quoted as saying at the time.
In the end, the pro-military propaganda campaign moved forward with great success. The Defense Department invested heavily in "support the troops" and individual warrior "tributes" on all the major corporate news networks.
