And both showed how Mexicans prefer to focus on those areas they are passionate about, even to the exclusion of the overall events that unfold. Either one could have chosen to take the presidency with but a mild convincing of the other, yet both refused to do so. Either one could have pushed for a greater sphere of influence with the other's acquiescence, yet neither chose that route. As with the others whose ego propelled them to power only to lose it all for lack of influence, Villa and Zapata were champions of their own causes, brilliant tacticians of their own spheres, and debutantes in all other areas. Experts of their own device, their ignorance of other devices proved their ultimate demise.
