Day688/Jan12th/Wednesday: The President met with Prime Minister Saad_Hariri of Lebanon in the Oval Office of the White House. The President and Prime Minister discussed U.S. support for Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, and stability, the ongoing work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and other regional issues. The President and the First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to Tucson, Arizona to attend the memorial event "Together We Thrive: Tucson and America" at the University of Arizona Tucson to support and remember victims of the mass shooting of January 8, 2011, in Tucson. United States Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Anthony Kennedy, Circuit Justice for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, also attended. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected a request from Texas Govenor Rick Perry and state attorney general Greg Abbott to bar the Environmental Protection Agency from taking over the state's greenhouse gas permitting program. Source

 

Day689/Jan13th/Thursday: The President sent a letter to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and the President of the U.S. Senate, declaring, " I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice stating that the emergency declared with respect to foreign terrorists who threaten to disrupt the Middle East peace process is to continue in effect beyond January 23, 2011. The crisis with respect to the grave acts of violence committed by foreign terrorists who threaten to disrupt the Middle East peace process that led to the declaration of a national emergency on January 23, 1995, has not been resolved. "

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revoked the permit of the Arch Coal's proposed Spruce No. 1 Mine in Logan County, West Virginia, one of the largest mountaintop-removal coal mining projects in the nation, declaring the mine would have done unacceptable damage to rivers, wildlife and communities in West Virginia. The President gave remarks at United States Ambassador Richard Holbrooke's funeral service at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Transcript Video

The President issued a Presidential Memorandum to the United States Secretary of State, directing the Richard C. Holbrooke Award for Diplomacy be established and awarded annually.

 

The President, in a released statement, condemned and deplored, -- the use of violence against citizens peacefully voicing their opinion in Tunisia, and I applaud the courage and dignity of the Tunisian people. The United States stands with the entire international community in bearing witness to this brave and determined struggle for the universal rights that we must all uphold, and we will long remember the images of the Tunisian people seeking to make their voices heard. I urge all parties to maintain calm and avoid violence, and call on the Tunisian government to respect human rights, and to hold free and fair elections in the near future that reflect the true will and aspirations of the Tunisian people."

The President directed the Secretaries of State, Treasury, and Homeland Security to take a series of steps to continue efforts to reach out to the Cuban people in support of their desire to freely determine their country's future:

1)      allow religious organizations to sponsor religious travel to Cuba under a general license

2)      allow accredited institutions of higher education to sponsor travel to Cuba for course work for academic credit under a general license; allowing students to participate through academic institutions other than their own; and facilitating instructor support to include support from adjunct and part-time staff
