In fact, I never imagined that this moment would happen. Just 6 years ago I was working as a Delta Flight attendant. I was even looking forward to retiring. And then on November 23, 2012 --"-I got the call that no parent should ever receive. I learned my son had been murdered in Jacksonville, Florida in what would become known as the "Loud Music Shooting."
Overnight, I went from a suburban mom to an activist seeking justice for Jordan. Since then I have dedicated my life to keeping our communities safer and making them stronger.
After Parkland, I was compelled to enter this race for Congress -- to provide leadership to change the way we approach gun violence in Washington. That will be my top priority as a Member of Congress.
But it won't be all I do. I'm going to Washington to champion an education system that gives every child an equal opportunity to thrive. We need a Congress that puts aside partisan fighting and does what's right to protect women's healthcare and everyone with preexisting conditions. We need Congress to prioritize our families over special interests. Finally, it's been the optimism of our students and young people who I met on the campaign trail that has truly inspired me. To you -- the next generation coming up in leadership -- I will always stand with you. You are the same age my son was when he was taken from this earth. I see him in your spirit. Jordan's here, with me, through your energy and passion for change.
This win is yours. We did it, Jordan.
Thank you, and God bless.
With love,
-- Lucy McBath
