Mitt Romney -- the Accidental and Reluctant Candidate

You see, you can run for the Candidacy, itself, and fail, but still win. But if you run for the Presidency, and you lose"? Well, that's pretty much it.

And that's not to say that it's stopped others from giving it another go (just ask Richard M. Nixon). But in this day and age, with the sense of hyper-scrutiny and media mashing and the utter, soul-destroying drubbing that such a candidate takes on the way to November, there's very few people who would really want to do it more than once, anymore.

Especially if, as we've already determined, there's no chance of winning -- by now, we all know how Mitt Romney feels about that.

Not long after Gingrich bowed out of the race, the Republican Party crowned Romney as their Presumptive Nominee. This happened on May Day, of all the ignominious dates; a day normally celebrated by Lefty, crypto-commie types as International Workers Day. There's marches and parades and socialist songs and solidarity forever, at least until it's collective bargaining time.

Maybe the Republican High Command knew more than they wanted to admit.

Since then, it's been something of an uphill climb for Mitt Romney, and he clearly doesn't seem to be putting his feet and legs into it. What little fire he had is gone, and he's just going through the motions. Even that acceptance speech was handled with all the verve and aplomb of Anakin Skywalker trying to make verbal love to his girlie squeeze in "Attack of the Clones': wooden and clunky, reminding us that the GOPuppeteer apparently can't write love scenes, either.

This can only be good news for Obama, as, given his skill at oration, masterful debating tactics, and true fire and desire to be President for another four years, he can probably wipe the floor with someone who's only doing this because, short of a miracle or a tragedy (or a tragic miracle), he's locked into this robo-dance like a 80's youth forced to pop-lock at gunpoint. On the other hand, the GOParty faithful, Anyone But Obamas, scorned Libertarians, and the like are going to vote for Romney no matter what he says or does from here on out, so there's just a chance that this race might be winnable after all.

Will he see this and come to life, once again? Maybe. But I kind of doubt it. I still credit most Americans with being intuitive to know a human robot when they see one, and if he was hoping to get people over the notion that he wasn't some stiff, unfeeling, tie-the-dog-to-the-roof type of person with his speech tonight, I suspect he blew it -- big time. He will doubtlessly get a bit of a bounce in the polls, but they will most likely wither under the glare of skepticism on the details of his five part plan.

And that would be truly sad. While I wouldn't want to expose America to the cruelty of 4-8 years of Romney/Ryan, it would be a good thing for Obama to feel like he's really in danger of anything other than spending more money to remain in the Oval Office. He's never more magnificent than when he has a cause to defend.

As of now, he's soon to be just fighting off half-hearted noogies from someone who really doesn't want to do more than shake hands, go home, and get back to business
