Nor has his justice department made any attempt to prosecute members of the Bush administration for war crimes, even though evidence of their criminal activities is exceedingly well documented. It is well documented in Bush administration memos, FOIA documents, congressional hearings, court documents, the testimony of victims, innumerable investigative news articles and books and direct admissions by intelligence, military and administration officials. The evidence shows that officials at the very highest level including Bush himself, Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and CIA Director George Tenet were directly involved in the decisions to commit in illegal activities, including torture and other war crimes. http://IndictBushNow.org

It's easy to look back and realize what a disaster Hitler precipitated. But at
the time, with the help of the media, Hitler looked pretty good to the
German people and to many Americans as well.
He was TIME Magazine's Man of the Year in 1938. The German people lived in a democratic
republic and assumed they didn't need to worry about a tyrant taking over. Like Americans at the beginning of the 21st
century, they had strict laws regarding what the government could, and more
importantly, could not do. Ostensibly
their leader was, like both Bush and Obama, a devoutly religious man, and had
even sung with the boy's choir of a monastery in his youth.
So, when confronted with a situation demanding individual
courage in the form of a government gone wrong, the German people -- like
today's Americans? -- simply pretended that the situation did not exist. When the Reichstag burned down, most Germans
simply refused to believe evidence that the fire had been staged with the
approval of Hitler himself. They were
afraid to believe it, just as most Americans today shy away from believing that
Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld had advance knowledge of what was planned for 9/11.
When Hitler requested temporary extraordinary powers (powers
not unlike those taken by Bush and continued by Obama), powers specifically
banned under German law, but powers Hitler claimed he needed to have to deal
with the "terrorists," the German people, having already given their souls to comforting
self-delusions, agreed. The temporary
powers were conferred, and once conferred, lasted until Germany was
destroyed.
Early on, Hitler could see that he ruled a nation of cowards, and knew he had to spend plenty to make the new war something even a nation of cowards could fight and win. So, with wealth-seeking German industrialists behind him, he spent vast sums of borrowed money just like our government has been doing -- on his wonder weapons, airplanes, submarines, ultra-long range artillery, the world's first cruise missile and the world's first guided missile -- weapons that could be used to kill at a distance so that those doing the killing need not have to face the reality of what they were doing. (Consider the recent television gun-camera footage of two Reuters photographers and their associates being machine-gunned to death by some trigger-happy gunner in the U.S. Army helicopter above. Consider the many attacks by remote controlled drones that drop Hellfire missiles on a great many people who may or may not actually be "enemy combatants.")
