As an entrepreneur who founded a PR Agency and continues to grow my business,   there are always the challenges of how to attract and retain employees.  Any small business owner will tell you that hiring good people is harder than finding good clients.  With years of experience creating and working with small businesses, here are some tips which we have found work:

  1. Hire Right:   Recruiting isn't something which can be turned on and off.   Companies must always be in the marketplace to hire strong employees.   Get the job specifications right, and vet and interview thoroughly.

  2. Be a Great Company To Work For: Appreciate the people who work for you, and we have found they will work even harder. Recognize and appreciate talent -- and reward them.

  3. Training Matters:   Today's employee wants to continually grow and learn -    The company that spends time improving the skills of its employees will see a return on that investment quickly.   Spending time to coach employees to perform better speaks volumes to them.   In short, it says you really care about them in doing the best job possible. Training programs needn't be involved or expensive.   Training does more than teach; it ties employees closer to the company and to one another.

  4. Community matters: Public service efforts, charity work, pro bono initiatives -- doesn't matter what you label it.   Doing something -- anything constructive -- in the community sends a loud and clear signal to current and future employees: you are a caring individual who might just be a caring boss.   Such activities also serve to build morale and motivation among those with your company.   They also act as marketing vehicles carrying word about your company to people in unexpected ways.

  5. Employ Your Employees: The people who work for you know what kind of person will thrive in your company, what work styles and personalities fit and lots of things they might never say to your face.   Use that knowledge and insight to everyone's advantage by enlisting your employees in the recruitment process.

There is clearly no magic bullet -- but caring matters.
