Getting there would have been a quality

Achieved. Actually, it would have been
A relationship between himself
And the rest of the world - the first man, and
None of the others. That kind of stands out
Like Everest. Yet others have confused
Relationships with qualities and died.
Battle reveals the third dimension of
Existence, the very first and last. It
Is the prop of all relationships
And qualities and so when endangered
For the glory of the group earns the finest
Distinctions and a cold indifference.

The Symphony of Refugees

A Palestinian woman who killed herself and an Israeli with explosives in Jerusalem on January 27th was identified as Wafa Idris, a 28-year old paramedic. Her mother proudly called her a martyr.

- The Economist, February 2nd 2002

At 28, what do young women do?

Here, they marry and raise kids, and be
Part of something, part of family. And no
Mother has to be proud of her daughter's
Martyrdom. Palestinian mothers
Have to be part of history, no grandchildren
To soothe in their indignant tears. They must
Soldier on with the soldiers around them.
No family without the state, we know;
Yet human weakness plays on heartstrings to
Bring forth our young; it is a music
That rises towards the stars, old as the desert.
We do not hear it, for we have our state;
It is the symphony of refugees.

Across the Gulf

Everyone likes a pioneer, and American woman especially could feel for Captain McGrath, away from her husband and two small adopted children. Nor was her task without danger. For several months the Jarrett patrolled the Gulf off Iraq, her crew of 262 searching ships suspected of breaking United Nations oil sanctions.... Her first command was of a salvage ship, Recovery, but her eyes were on warships. Sailing on one, she said, was like driving a sports car. It was "sexy and glamorous".

- Obituary of Kathleen McGrath, the first woman to command an American warship, The Economist, October 5th 2002

Death comes to everyone; it came to her.
Cut off prematurely at fifty by
Cancer, I wonder if she thought about
The skeletal young lives across the Gulf -
The everlasting sea of life,
Symbol of our common humanity,
Salt with tears, boundless as ambition,
Joyous as the first kiss, and deep as death.
Russian women, in another war,
Were trained to kill, but most were kept back
To produce more Russians for the war;
Iraqi women have been breeding, but
Not for battle: for politicians' votes
And for careers that make good reading for recruits.

Wounded Knee

Mr. [Dee] Brown said that in his researches into the negotiations between the Indians and the American government, he was impressed by the quality of the Indian representatives. They were well briefed and aware of the government's policy of manifest destiny. Their weakness seems to be that they trusted the government to keep its word. "Their trust in authority was amazing; they just never seemed to believe that anyone could lie," Mr. Brown said in an interview.

- Obituary of Dee Brown, author of "Bury my Heart At Wounded Knee", The Economist, December 21st 2002

The truth does not lie buried long nor deep;
