Becker: Especially meaningless. What is this, word kindergarten? Did unprepared home buyers given bad loans "deserve" to be foreclosed? In politics you get what you achieve, thanks to fundraising and electioneering, often done ruthlessly. What "we, the people" deserve only comes when we act in concert and with some risk.
"Let's get to work." The Luntz finale: "No other end-of-speech rallying cry is more motivational to voters."
Becker: As opposed to what? What a tin-ear "rallying cry" in an age of massive lays offs, outsourcing, and attacks on public employees who actually work and "deserve" salaries? "Let's get to work" now means "let's find new ways to con the suckers" and keep wages low, a sorry apology to the Protestant Ethic.
Last word: That Luntz is a respected sycophant who destroys language and logic is not news. That he has the audacity to promote empty words dripping with deception and guaranteed to lower the quality of discourse -- that is immoral, troubling and beyond that "control" people want "back." How reassuring to know in only a few years we have evolved from the focused unreality of Karl Rove to the empty void of platitudes that is Frank Luntz. I can't wait to see which GOP dinosaur is afflicted with the new, junior Rove.
