Progressives can seek to control the message in the same way Blue Dogs and Republicans did.
Whatever they do, one thing is for certain: Democrats are far too timid when it comes to politics in this nation. And, I'm not just talking about those who have offices in Washington, D.C.
Too many who call themselves liberal or progressive or Democrat get afraid when Republicans look like they might win and they alienate the very causes they support under the assumption that they will somehow get another shot at winning the cause later if they just help Democrats eke some incremental reform past the big, bad Republicans in Congress.
They vote Democrat just because Democrats aren't Republican.
It's long past due. Those who consider themselves to be liberal or progressive can no longer support the second-most enthusiastic corporatist party in America---the Democrats.
We may not know what the future holds if we do not choose Pepsi instead of Coke but if we have the imagination and moral fortitude to refuse both of these corporate colas, we may just one day get to drink a cola with real sugar that doesn't use high fructose corn syrup or aspartame or any other ingredients that infect and damage people who are convinced that they have freedom of choice when it comes to picking candidates from the two parties that dominate politics in America.
